    BBQ Chicken Question

    For a clean bulk does anyone think buying a lb. of shredded bbq chicken (white meat) from local bbq restaraunts is a bad idea? BBQ is my favorite meal and i crave shredded chicken, pork, and potato salad but havent given in to any of it other than the chicken which i'll bring home and eat with veggies or wheat pasta. Good Idea or is there hidden fat im not aware of?

    Probably some sugar and what not in the bbq sauce on the chicken. Every restaurant is different and there are some bbq sauces with relatively no fat or sugar in it and some with lots in it. Buy it and look at the nutrition facts. If it has xtra fat that you dont want then oh well. You live and learn.
    Shouldnt be that bad tho

    It depends on the type of bbq chicken exactly. When I've done shredded bbq chicken in commercial kitchens, we've smoked the whole bird and chopped up all the skin/dark meat. Which makes it a kinda unhealthy dish between the fat and all the molasses/sugar/ketchup in the sauce. If it's just the breast, then it's fine minus too much sauce. Neither will kill you, especially when bulking up.

    anything bbq is the shiznits!!!! But the amount of sugar is killer. I know Im comparing apples to oranges but I have been using Franks Red Hot Wing sauce on my chicken and turkey and it is actually pretty good and contains NO sugar. I used to put ketchup on everything until I realized that 1T contains about 4-6g of sugar, and bbq sauce I think is worse.

    BUT IT TASTES SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ill have it when I have a cheat day which is only once a month.....then I just drink it from the bottle, lol!

    BBQ is a constant craving of mine, so I occasionally make a sunday feast of brisket/chicken/ribs/pork shoulder. I pick out as much fat as possible before I eat it and use a home-made sauce that is very high in flavor, low in sugar. For those of you who like Carolina style bbq, do this. Get a whole bird, rub it heavy with the seasoning blend I detail below. Smoke it for 4-6 hours just as you would a brisket/ribs - low and slow. In the oven w/ liquid smoke works if it must be that way, otherwise a smoker/grill is ideal. Take off the skin and any extra fat which hasn't melted in, shred with a fork and toss with the sauce I detail below. You'll thank me later.

    Rub (makes a bunch):
    * 1 tablespoon cumin
    * 2 tablespoons chili powder
    * 2 tablespoons paprika
    * 1 tablespoon ground coriander
    * 1 tablespoon garlic powder
    * 2 tablespoon salt
    * 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
    * 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    * 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)

    Sauce:
    * 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
    * 1/2 cup dijon mustard
    * 1 tbsnp. black pepper
    * 1 tbspn. white pepper
    * 1/4 cup worchestershire sauce
    * Cayenne pepper or tobasco to desired spicyness
    * 1 tbsnp. chili powder.
    * 1 large chopped onion
    Sautee the onion until caramelized (sweetness helps w/ lack of sugar), add spices to toast them a bit, add vinegar/worschestershire, reduce by 1/4, add mustard, reduce slightly, add heat. This is a great sauce if you like spicy/zesty and can do without tons of molasses and ketchup. I make mine very spicy with lots of tabasco and crushed red pepper as well.

    An alternative can be like stated above franks red hot sauce, that basically makes a "buffalo" taste to the chicken. Or you can use a1 steak sauce with 2g carbs and no fat or montreal chicken powder with no carbs.

    Unless you're going for competion-like bodybuilding, I wouldn't be to concerned about bbq sauce.
