    Protein Shake

    Hey guys,

When consuming a protein shake (mine is basically 24g protein, 5g carb and 2g fat per scoop), do i also need to add a carb or fat source in itsimultaneously? for example, maybe mixing oats or flaxseed oil.

I'm not asking if its a good idea or not, im asking if its a must. Assume this is not PWO, and im just having it sometime during the day, but i dont intend to have a carb/fat meal with it. So just want to down a protein shake mixed with milk all on its own. Heard some stuff about always needing a certain amount of carbs to be consumed with the shake in order for it to be utilised by the body, would like to know how true this is.

    Thanks fellas

depends on what you are drinking it for... if you want it for the taste, then no. If you want it to clear your macro goal, then most likely your diet is messed up anyway. Pure protein imo does next to nothing. so I believe it should at a minimum be combined with milk

Based on this statement, should I be mixing my Casein shake before bed with milk instead of water then? I was attempting to take in as few carbs as possible before hitting the sack.

You should never be having a protein powder by itself for a meal, yes always add a solid food or an oil.. Oats or olive oil are great choices..

oh wow really. well my macros are all in check. i use protein shake same as most people, just to get in that extra protein. the reason i may not have a carb/fat meal with it is because like gbrice75, i have it at night before hitting the sack and really dont wanna put ne carbs in the mix or ne other time wen i dont really want carbs.

so are u guys saying that that carb/oil addition is required for absorption? how come it says nothing of this sort on the label of most protein powders? and if this is the case, does that apply to protein from whole foods also? surely u can eat a steak all on its own and expect the protein to be absorbed....

Your protein from your powder will get absorbed whether you eat the powder alone or with water or juice or ANYTHING. Addition of carbs MAY increase absorption efficiency due to the slightly larger insulin spike, but is not necessary. Don't expect anything but bullsh.t marketing hype to be put on any protein label/tub/bag. Protein powder is a whole food, but if you consumed whey, it is a very fast absorbing food and hence it wont be much help at all. I don't recommend a shake only mean just because you not getting any important nutrients, such as fiber, vitamins and minerals. But a casein only mean is different as it has a much slower rate of absorption, with blood plasma level reaching peak at around 4 hours after ingestion. Casein is best during the day and before bed. Whey is ONLY good pre and post training sessions (cardio or resistance)

carbs at night wont do any harm, your body will consume them during the period of starvation. Longer chained carbohydrates, such as wholemeal/wholewheat/wholegrain food such as brown bread and brown rice, etc are great before bed. My pre-bed meal consists of a cub of brown rice and 80-100g of casein protein.

You should be having some form of fat with it before bed, to fit your macros and to slow absorption throughout the night. ESPECIALLY if you are using whey, which a lot of trainers say is one of the biggest wastes of money in bbing, except pre/post workout. I would get yourself some egg or casein protein. Hit that up with some fishoils (15 tabs is plenty) and/or 1/2 tblspoons of olive oil. Also, if you're trying to move away from using powders but like the convenience aspect, just drink some raw eggs. Throw them in the shaker and pound it down, too easy.
