Workout (mostly cardio) at night - should I eat before bed?

I play ice hockey 2 times per week and usually get home from my games around 11pm or so. Hockey is a rather cardio-intensive workout (1 to 1.5 minutes of hard skating, then a few minutes resting on the bench, then repeat for about 45 min to an hour).

It's also a great workout for the legs - they start to burn pretty bad and get weak by the end of the game.

So I'm trying to cut down some BF (I'm guessing I'm around 16%-18%), but hit the gym with weights 3 to 4 times per week, and then a few more days of cardio plus my hockey.

Question: Should I slam back a casein shake before bed, or since the hockey is mostly aerobic, should I just let my body burn it's own fat stores? Sure I don't want to lose the muscle I have, but I don't want to impede any of the benefits from getting the cardio in?

casien would be good but you also need to think about replenishing your glycogen with some carbs (i might get slammed for this) I think if you work out that close to bedtime you should still get some good cabs in after (waxey maize, malodextrin)

Isn't that what beer is for (old-man hockey is generally referred to as beer-leagues btw)

Casein or any protein for that matter is a no brainer before bed. Normally, I wouldn't recommend carbs before bed, but in your unique case I would probably make an exception. However, with all due respect I must disagree with scotty on the carb choices - I would most definitely not do simple carbs, particularly dextrose/maltodextrin, etc. I would go with a slow burning complex carb to avoid any kind of insulin spike - oats or something like that.

thanks gbrice and scotty - Protein it is and perhaps some complex carb's depending on how hard I worked the muscles.

I'll tell you one thing, when I was first starting out (first show) I was doing cardio first thing in the morning, 3 days at lunch too, and then another prebed cardio session AND IT SUCKED.

Back to the point, I popped some BCAAS after my PM cardio and hit the sack.

I lost a ton of wieght this way and it had no effect on my gains.

SO, if you don't feel incredibly hungry, get all your calories in before your PM cardio, shower and hit the sack. It's 100% ok Just make sure you have a good 1st meal to break the fast.
