    Oats..

okay, so when i see in the diet section that you should eat 1 cup oats or 1.5 cups of oats is that BEFORE it is cooked??? i mean it swells up to over three times it size.. so when i go to make a cup of oats.. which is roughly 156grams uncooked it swells up to damn near 4 cups in size.. that is A LOT of oats.. i mean it equates to 600cals 103g of carbs and 26g of protein.. so when you say a cup of oats do you mean a cup of prepared oats??? just trying to figure this oat.. as i can eat 2 cups of cooked brown rice and get nearly the same thing that 4 cups of cooked oats take.. and oats are harder to swallow in my opinion.. just trying to figure this out. thanks.

Machine - oats should always be dry measure. 1/2 cup (typical serving size) is roughly 5g protein, 27g carbs, and 2.5g fat. Yes, it swells up to more then double it's original volume which is why I love them - very filling and satisfying!

Not to hijack Machine's thread, but I think the question has been answered so hopefully it's ok.

Slimmer - you're talking about Baseline's, right? I find them very 'spongy' and dense.... not light and fluffy like a pancake. Granted I know it's ground oats and not flour, but are you doing anything special? How exactly are you preparing these?

i started with his recipe but tweaked it to this:

    1 cup oats
    1 cup egg whites
    1 cup cottage cheese
    nutmeg
    splenda
    splash of skim milk
    drop of vanilla
    blueberries on top

And this batch last for 3 big pancakes

and I really blend the oats a lot first before adding anything else.....rolled oats is what I am using

question answered.. i am curious about this myself..

Gucks.. thanks for the link.. FYI i was born in america.. haha so cups are grand.. plus, we use pints here to measure alcohol and a pint is two cups.. i think the english/irish only recently went over to the metric system.. it makes sooooo much more sense too.

Dec.. when you put them in your shake do you just shake and pound it before they get a chance to swell up???

Same thing. Oats are oats. Rolled oats are just regular oats that have literally been 'rolled' to achieve that flat consistency which makes them easier and quicker to cook.

Uh, those are called "instant" and no, they aren't as good as regular oats, because they normally have sugar added!

I'm doing 3 cups/day of oats, and I do all of it in shakes. Waaaay easier than cooking it and then trying to get down all the volume. Usually add in a little protein powder for flavor and blend it very fine, and I'm good to go.

That's what I said Gucks, you can't just add water to rolled oats. If you are just adding water isn't that instant oatmeal? Rolled oats is what I meant by "regular" oats, actually I've never seen oats that weren't rolled oats. Not looking to step on toes, just looking for clarification

I was referring to f.batista's post:

If you are just adding hot water to your oats, that is probably "instant oatmeal" which is NOT the same or as good as "regular rolled oats", also sometimes called "old-fashioned oats" because instant oatmeal has a higher GI rating and less nutritional content. That's why normally instant oatmeal isn't recommended.

That said, any oatmeal is better than no oatmeal so if it's all you can do, I'd say go for it.
