protein bars are candy with extra protein added in. if it fits in your macros and you dont replace your solid meals with a prot bar, then why not. i myself never eat prot bars.

eat your two last meals of the day without carbs.

    i'm similar to you, i go to bed at 11pm, and i'm cutting;

preworkout meal at 6pm: 1 scoop protien, 1/4 cup oats, handful almonds, 4oz chicken breast
    workout from 630-730 pm
post workout at 8pm: 1 scoop protien
dinner at 8:30pm: 4oz chicken breast, veggy, med. sweet potato
    10:30pm: 1 cup cottage cheese
    11pm BED

down 16 lbs, having my last carb at 8:30pm hasn't been a big deal YET...

the fact that i'm eating my last carb 45-60 minutes after my workoutl, i think helps.
if you worked out at say 5pm, have your carb at 530 or 6pm, and that's it, no more carbs.

    as others have said,

cutting (carbs); AM, pre and post workout
gain (or maintain) (carbs); all meals.

This is completely incorrect. Protein bars are not candy nor are they food, their just manufactured and processed powders, chemicals, and flavors mashed up. Protein bars should never be eaten unless it's an absolute emergency.

Secondly, your statement about not eating carbs makes no sense. Carbs or Fats should be present in every meal, with some exceptions (except right before bed - where Casein-rich protein is favored due to it's slow-digesting properties). You need energy to continue to doing work. Have protein only means your body is going to use protein as fuel, leaving less for muscular growth and repair. Finally, not everyone works out or lifts weights in the morning/afternoon, many due in the evening, and I can't imagine a postworkout meal at 8:00pm without complex carbs, let alone any carbs :S.

    Just my $0.02

that was my opinion about protein bars as they are high in fat, carbs, chemicals and everything, just like candys. this guy stated above, that he uses them as a cheat meal. would it be better to go massive cheat meal, and possible fail on your diet later during the week? no.

And like you said carbs or fats should be present in every meal. yes, why not to take fats/protein instead of carbs/protein? eating no carbs is to control your insulin levels, becouse youll produce HGH at nights and especially when you fall asleep, which helps fat loss.

of course your more active during the days, when you need more carbs and energy for your daily activities

we all are different and everyones body works different. if you feel fine eatin carbs for your last meal, then go for it.

I would stay away from protein bars in general. Most of them are loaded with more nasty sh!t than you can pronounce. Make your own high protein bars with whole foods and a sweetener - oats, protein powder, egg whites, splenda, cinnamon, etc and you'll be alot better off IMO.

As for carbs, unless i'm doing an all out bulk (which I never do), I consume them when needed - generally in my first meal of the day, and around my workout (pre/pwo). All of my other meals are pro/fat with fiberous carbs (leafy green veggies).
