    sodium and water.

I know high sodium causes water retention. Can drinking a lot of water with or immediately after eating a meal w/ sodium alleviate this at all? Are there any other tricks to avoid this?

Drinking a lot of water throughout the day is the most proven and dependable method of minimizing formation of edema due to high sodium intake. As for a particular trick, drinking a lot of water with or immediately after eating a high sodium meal will not prevent formation of edema to a significant extent. Drinking water should be mostly consumed in equal portions throughout the day for a more efficent biological input-output. Kidneys are excretion organs and they were designed to work continuesly, not occasionally. Drinking water above maintanence regarding hydration, is the healtiest, cheapest, most effective method for not only keeping edema away but also getting rid of it. In my off days, I drink what most people would call too much water. I do this on purpose and go pee every 30 mins. or so, knowing that I am gently getting rid of previously stored water due to high sodium and carb intake in my body.
