    Atkins Diet

    Hey all

I am currently 105kg and 12% body fat, 1.94m tall and 26 years old. I am currently in the induction phase of the Atkins diet. I was wondering is it possible to pick up lean muscle mass and decrease body fat on this diet? My goal is to be between 110-115kg and body fat 0f between 6-8. Any advice, tips etc will be highly appreciated!

The Atkins diet is one of many flavors of ketogenic type diets. It is definitely not good for adding muscle, or maintaining it for that matter, IMO.

There are other ketogenic type diets that have been geared towards the bodybuilder. CKD (cyclic ketogenic diet) is popular; check out TOP's thread on it - great resource. http://forums.steroid.com/showthread...c#.Tsvv1j2BrBI

Personally, I would look into Dave Palumbo's approach. Do a search here in the nutrition section, and/or google him.

Thanks very much for the resources, will definitely check it out.I am a little confused today and really hope someone can assist with this, I have a scale that measures weight, body fat, water, bone mass. When i started atkins my reading was 12% bf and stayed their changing only slightly every week, now that im on atkins and i have been strict with the diet, today it said im 17.2% thats 5% in a week and a half, is this because of the ketones in my system, coz i definitely dont look like i hav picked up any body fat actually look a little more ripped. Anyone know why this could be happening?

I have used the Atkins many times. It is a GREAT diet for the first two months to really drop BF% quickly. However, the diet does run into problems if you are also lifting weight since you really do need carbs for this activity.

A few years ago, I was doing the Atkins and lifting. I was really getting grouchy at work. This younger chic that works at a gym p/t asked me if i was on the Atkins, i'm like yeah, how did you know? she said she knew cause i'm usually pretty upbeat and happy, but with the restricted carbs, it really soured my mood. So I added back in some carbs and it made all the difference in the world.

I'd say a strict Atkins is more for people that don't lift.

OP, I don't put much credence into those body mass scales. Mine was way inaccurate as well. Use a combination of the scale, mirror, measurements, and how your clothes fit. Those together will give you a pretty good idea of what's going on with your body.

I think I will stay on the Atkins until i reach 8% body fat then move to the CKD Diet to maintain the fat loss and also pick up some more lean muscle. I will be going to another gym just to do all my measurements their fat percentage should be a lot more accurate. Thanks again for the assistance!

Never perform fat% check on electric machines/scales when on a carb restricted diet as it measures ur total body water and through that number it calculates ur lean body weight and when carbs are absent body water drops drastically so the scale sees u as a fat man....ur getting leaner no way to get fatter on an Atkins specially when u lift as insulin is completely absent.
