    Brown vs. White Rice?????

I went to the grocery store today and checked out the difference between brown and white rice and I found nothing different between the two. So, why do some people say brown is better?

    Devistate,

This is the difference: White rice is more a simple carbohydrate in that it yields it sugar very fast. It is a good idea to eat it after a good hard workout. Brown rice is a more complex carbo in that it takes longer to for the body to digest its sugar and it is more likely NOT to be stored as fat. Both are very good only there is a time and place for both

Nice Big R, brown rice hasn't been striped of its brown coating (where all the fiber and nutrients are) so it takes your digestive system longer to break it down, therefor it has a slower effect on your insulin and empties from the stomach slower. A good thing (except post workout)

If you compare Uncle Bens Brown it has
    5/35/2/1.5 (p/c/fiber/fat)
and Uncle Bens Converted white (the good stuff)
    4/38/0/0 (p/c/fiber/fats)

Both are for 1/4 cup dry.

There is a difference the main is the fiber and fat, that is what slows the insulin responce and gives brown a lower GI.

White Rice IS NOT BAD AT ALL! You just need to know when the best time to eat it is. Timming is eveything.

Basmati (white) is sometimes called "popcorn" rice. It has a great flavor (nutty) and it a damn site better than Uncle Ben's but it's also costs more and does take more time to cook. Same goes for Brown rice. I forget the name of the brand I buy but I get it at Kash & Karry (FL).

The responses from the BIG R and PAININTHEAZZ are dead on concerning digestion and sugar breakdown. Post workout I eat Basmanti, for other meals I'll eat the brown rice. Both taste better than the processed stuff.

thanks guys thats why i was asking because i prefer white and basmati rice over brown.I am aware of the higher gi in white rice and that there are some times which are appropritae to take it in(post workout) .

I wanted to eat exclusively white(long grain) not minute rice or basmati instead of brown and so wanted to know just how much impact would it have .
