    OATS: Cooked or Raw

Do you cook your oats or eat them raw?

95% of time I eat them raw. Mix them with egg whites (raw) and protein for breakfast. I've never heard anything bad about eating them raw, but I just wanted to see if their is something I don't know. For instance is absorption different? Am I missing out on any nutrients by doing this? etc...

    What is your thoughts?

missing out on water, that's about it
for eggs on the other hand many say you should cook them or the protein is not all usable

I just throw oats in the shakes I make. My blender just turns them into dust.

If I have the time I will cook and eat them. Most the time I do exactly what you do and mix them with liquid egg whites and protein powder and eat them raw. If there is any difference it is probably microscopical, I wouldn't think about it to much.

As bobjack mentioned above as well you want to make sure you're buying the liquid egg whites that come in the carton and are already pasteurized. If you are eating egg whites straight from the cracked egg raw you can risk getting salmonella. Cooking the eggs at a certain tempature kills the bacteria.

I do both. I love cooked oats but don't always have the time. Particularly PWO, I just dump em' in my shake, chew, swallow, repeat. I enjoy chewing up the raw oats, I guess i'm weird.

    No major difference in digestion.

Roger that. I use carton eggs, way easier. I will throw a full egg in sometimes too. I have never got sick from eating raw eggs and I have consumed thousands! Maybe I have just been lucky or I have a strong stomach..

For breakfast I cook them most of the time. Post workout, I grind them and mix into my protein shake.

GB, What are your thoughts on ground oats vs. whole?

The ground is easier to break down n therefore requires less energy to do this and also seems to make you feel less "full". Because it is already broken down and easier to use, does the body utilize these faster than oats that are whole? Is there a nutritional benefit to grinding them up? or possibly a disadvantage? Or am I overthinking this?

Like many others I grind my oats into powder n mix with shakes.

I find it easier to just get the carton egg whites that are already pasteurized, rather then cracking the eggs and sorting out the whites myself. The liquid egg white cartons are pretty pricey though!

I'm sure the odds of salmonella are minimal, it's something I would just rather avoid if I could though!

Bingo! The difference, if any, would be negligible at best. The first stage of digestion (chewing) has already been done for you. Big deal. 200g of oats is 200g of oats, whole or ground. Your body still has to process 200g of oats.

I hear that! Never tried strawberry, but banana and a little milk and that stuff is delicious! Rare, but sometimes if I don't have banana and I cook it I will put a little brown sugar with milk in it, also very good!

Raw oats with eggwhites all mixed together and drink...did that for years. It actually got to where it tasted pretty good. Of course, cooked is better in terms of enjoyment. I actually love oatmeal. Put a little splenda on there and a little cinnamon if you got it and it's hard to beat.

If he's using pasteurized egg whites the protein absorption shouldn't be a problem. If you're going to drink eggs, it's always better and far healthier to drink the liquid egg whites rather than the egg white right out of a shell.

    ever try protein porridge?

mix scoop of whey whatever flavour you want with 250ml water and stir this into 100g oats and then microwave, stir a couple times and top with sliced banana and/or strawberry and enjoy

Sure have! I used to make that back in college all the time. Except I used Instant flavored oatmeal out of packs.

I don't like blending mine. I like the oats in there to give me something to chew on. Curbs my hunger better. Anyway, it's all the same either way.

I have heard a personal trainer at the gym tell me to eat oats the same way. He did not mention blending them though.

The pasteurisation temperature isn't high enough to cook the whites enough to make them fully bioavailable. If your pour your egg whites in straight from the carton you are only getting about 52% of the protein you think you are getting!

17oz of water, 1 cup of oats, 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter, 1 1/2 scoops of whey protein for morning shake.

    1)raw only...
2)raw eggs absorb only 50% of total protein... eating 10raw eggs = eating 5 cooked... waste of money and protein.
