Diabetic type 2 & High blood pressure, need advice on diet, I've hit a plateau.

Hey so I had posted in another section as to wether or not gear was right for me or not at this stage in my life, since I'm desperate to try anything to get past my plateau. im Male, 33 years of age. I am 5"10 260 pounds. Not sure what my body fat is but at around 200 lbs I'd be roughly 12% give or take. I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I exercise quite a bit and there are times where I don't for a while because I get a bit discouraged by the lack of further progess. I've tried just about everything. I could calories, carbs, fat, protein intake. I take fish oil, vege greens, gaspari multi vitamin, phyto berries, green coffee bean extract, protein shake isolate-93. I spend so much money on these supplements hoping they would help me with energy and give me a bit of an added boost to my metabolism to burn the fat of what seems to be impossible. I used to weigh 340 pounds, so I've lost 80 pounds on my own but that first bit was in some ways easy as I had to stop simple things to get that weight off. eg quit drinking 4L of coke a day, stop eating an entire loaf of bread a day, stop eating 2 large pizzas 3x a week kinda thing. This last 50-60 pounds won't go away. Here's what I've tried as far as macro nutrients go. Wether I eat 1600-2200 calories a day, exercise or not I don't really gain nor lose weight. I will fluctuate in weight only by about 5-10 pounds at the most. so rather than going back 15 years to when I started putting the weight on I will only go back as far as in January of this year 2012 when I started to do my own study as to how my body responds to exercise, calorie restriction ect. Jan 1st 2012 I was 272 pounds. I started using myfitnesspal and ate 2000 calories a day with 0 exercise on purpose just to see for my own study how that would work to begin with. At the end of the month by Feb 1st 2012 I had only lost 2 pounds. So then Feb 2nd 2012 I decided to add a 30 minute walk a day changing nothing to my diet to see if that would help any. You'd think it would but to my dissapointment I was still 270 pounds. Now we're March 1st, been keepin strict count of my calories and had added exercise and after 2 months I had only lost 2 pounds. So March 1st I decide you know what? I'm gonna try this P90X stuff and see how that works out for a month. Again knowing I was gonna be working out I figured I'd stick to 2500 calories...why? because it was suggested following their diet plan that I eat 3200 calories. Are you kidding me I thought? I'm trying to lose fat not eat more. after 1 month by April 1st 2012 I get on that scale and I had gained 3 pounds. I now weighed 273 lbs!!! I grabbed a measuring tape and had lost about .5" off my waist so I knew I didn't get fatter, the fact still remained that I'm trying to lose weight and get to 200 pounds not get closer to 300lbs. So now I figure maybe 2500 calories is too much so I drop it to 2000 calories for the month of May 2012 and do another 30 days of P90X. Now I'm back to 270 pounds but I feel much stronger and feel less pain after each workout and I'm using heavier dumbells ect so I'm content but again now we're half way through the year it's fricking June 1st and I still weigh 270 pounds. 2 lbs lost in 6 months ...wow whoopie shit im thinking to myself. Now I'm beyond pissed off I decide after half a year to try something else. No excercise, 2000 calories but this time I'm gonna count and restrict my carbs I lost 5 pounds in almost 2 weeks eating about 80-120g of carbs a day. Now I'm thinking to myself I lost in 10 days what I couldn't do in 6 damn months. So now I was like wow that low carb diet shit really does work and I get excited and decide to add a walk to my daily routine, I was dizzy for a bit but got used to it pretty quick, I tried P90X on the carb restriction, it was nearly impossible and had to take breaks, thought I was gonna faint. but I was 265 pounds and I swore to myself I will never go back in the 270's again...screw that! Anyhow I manage to keep up with it till July 1st and I managed to get down to 260 pounds. I was so excited I called my parents and told them I broke out of the 270 range I was at for years and got down to 260. Sure it had taken me 7 months to lose 10 pounds but whatever, it was better than nothing I thought. July 1st I'm thinking 2000 calories 50g of carbs lets rock this out! I wanna be 250 by the end of this month but I couldn't quite hack the P90X, after several times almost passing out I knew restricting my carb intake was impacting me so I figured I'd stick to walking since that's easier. after a few weeks that didn't do anything so I dropped my calories to 1500 50g of carbs and by august 1st I was 252 pounds! I had now lost 20 pounds since January 2012 so 8 months it took. Now we're Almost Oct 1st and I've put on 10 pounds in the last 2 months because I've been frustrated and I took a break from fitness pal and counting carbs, calories, ect. It basically drove me nuts how much I had to put in to lose 20 pounds only to easily put half of that back on in a matter of weeks. In closing back in August of 2010 I lost 30 pounds in 30 days. I was 270 and dropped down to 240 by Sept 1st 2010. I did it by eating chicken breast , lettuce, tomatoes, water, 1/2 cup oatmeal a day 2000 calories and walking 10km or 6.2 miles a day. Here's the thing, after that month I felt like shit I had no energy, sure my gut was smaller and everyone was like WTF man!!! wow you look great! so that felt amazing but I just couldn't keep up I had run myself into the ground. I would eventually put the weight back on slowly by slowing down on my walks and increasing my calories to 2400. Sorry for all the rambling I just figured the more info you know about me and what I've done the more accurate a response I may get. When I lose that 30 pounds in a month my sugars were under 100% control, nowdays they aren't quite as low but not too bad. My theory is that as long as my sugars are a bit high my body won't burn fat until the sugars drop. as far as working out and walking it's been 2 weeks now that I started walking 25-30 min a day again im about 260-262 pounds. Finally here's what a typical day looks like for me when I eat.

Meal 1: 2-4 eggs with 2 slices of country harvest bread. fish oil, vitamin, vege greens, phyto berries, Protein shake. half the time I have no bread and use lettuce instead.

Meal 2: 200g of skinless chicken breast. 80g of romaine lettuce. 1TBsp thousand island dressing. 30g of black diamond brick cheese.

Meal 3: 100g of skinless chicken breast. 40g of romaine lettuce. 1TBsp thousand island dressing. 30g of black diamon brick cheese.
    cucumber, tomato, onions.

I know this is likely a crap eating regime but it's because I just don't know what to do anymore. If I eat anything else my blood sugars go up and these foods keep my blood sugars somewhat low. A day I have about 1500-1800 calories 40-60g of carbs, 50-60g of fat and roughly 130g or protein. I eat this stuff a lot because I'm getting my protein, some veggies, and eggs which I just love. this is a bit different from what I ate when I lost 30 pounds in 30 days back then I'd eat 2000 calories which was roughly 600g of chicken breast a day, lettuce, tomatoes, 1/4 to 1/2 oatmeal a day, protein shake and that was about it and the occassional serving of brown rice like 50g. I kinda tried that again recently but I just don't have the energy to walk 6.2 miles or 10km a day. I'm sorry I wrote a lot.

Welcome El and thanks for sharing your history and congrats on the loses you have made so far! I was in a similar situation - eating deficit calories, but not the right ones and my doctor had me all lined up for insulin injections...i said no thanks, lost 40 lbs and control sugar with oral meds and diet and exercise now. I have much more energy now that I am not carrying around those extra useless pounds.

I have P90X and only lasted 9 days LOL

Do you have the ability to eat more frequently throughout the day, for example 6 x a day? R u willing to cut out the cheese and replace with healthy fats?
I really think you need to overhaul your meals and your results are mostly on you cuz you have to execute the plan Of course, you'll have other members cheering you on as long as you want.

You sound very motivated and plz don't give up on yourself, not yet. welcome again and take a look at the sticky notes and read a few of the others accountability logs. 405, Samson, BikerAl, 00rajuncajun00 plus OP have logs up and running. There are a bunch of diet experts who have made significant progress and I am sure they will be happy to help share their knowledge with you!

Thanks for your reply, I'm sorry my post was so long. I just figured the more detailed it is the better. Congrats on your personal achievements are you type 1 or 2? I know some type 2's who need insulin. Just curious that's all. I will look for the sticky notes on nutrition I take it? I actually had a hard time finding the nutrition section I had to google steroid nutrition forum to get to it lol. I'll look up some of these people and see what they have for guidelines, I could eat more frequently if that theory is really proven to be true to be better than yes. I think it comes from feeding a lil bit every few hours to keep the metabolism fueled in high gear all the time rather than smuthering it with 3 bigger meals right? I am willing to do anything to get to my goal. I may not look the part but I am very active so I at least have that down, I just need to be educated in a proper diet so I can get to be lean, toned. I will do whatever it takes to get there. I keep exercising despite not really seeing any results lol. Talk about motivation huh? I will drop cheese if you think it makes that much of a difference as eating 60g of brick cheese might be too much a day. I just don't know....that's my problem is that I'm just not an expert and I have the desire to be educated so I can do whatever it takes to get to where I wanna be. I've learned a lot of basic things like counting your macros, fats, proteins, carbs and there being simple and complex and simple being broken down quickly and spiking sugars ect. Some things are obvious but others aren't such as what exact calorie intake should I be at as I've tried P90X formula, and others and have tried them all out for at least a month each with very little results. Then I crash down to 1600 calories and 50g of carbs. I finally see the weight loss but just don't have the energy to push through a hard workout like P90X. Then if I eat more I don't lose weight but I can workout harder....lol just seems like I can't have it both ways of having the energy to rip through the workout but eat little enough to lose body fat.

^^^ i am type 2 and its a family history for me.

the reason i suggested smaller more frequent meals is because you are diabetic. eating low glycemic foods more frequently will reduce your insulin spikes!!
no need to apologize for not knowing about nutrition. i didn't realize the difference between bad fats and good fats until about 2 years ago

What i learned is that food is fuel for my body. my body needs proper nutrition to fuel my lifestyle with includes working out. Before, food was just a emotional enjoyment or convenient eating. you will be eating differently AND have had enuff energy to make it thru your intense workouts!!!

You will be asked for stats. Height, weight,bf%.
If you don't know your bf% and are willing to post a pic, other members can estimate it for you. (I am just awful at estimating bf%).
What are your SPECIFIC goals...lose # lbs of fat/ gain muscle or what ever it is that you want to achieve. I also like to put a realistic timeframe. lose 30 lbs in 4 months for example.
We will also be interested in your workout routine and schedule.

anything I say about my weight and height and what exactly I want to happen to me is being denied
I'm 5"10 260 pounds body fat % unknown but I do know that per my doctor my fat free mass is 180 pounds. I want to be between 8-10% body fat and maybe at the most add 10 or 15 pounds of muscle if I think I look too scrawny. That's pretty much it. where do I post this pic of me?
PS: I know it's hard to believe I'm 180 pounds FFM but I'm willing to accept maybe the few times I got checked they were wrong. I do have really big legs and a big head, maybe those weigh a lot lol

Have you ever tried a herb called devils claw? A friend of mine is diabetic and he takes it to bring his blood sugar down and it really helps. Its also got a load of other properties, I recently posted up asking if anybody had tried it for weightloss as its an appetite suppressent.
Have you ready the stickies at the top of the nutrition forum page? There's one for diabetics, could be worth reading plus some very informative threads on general diets.

elonidas welcome to the forum man!

first off we need ur complete stats: age weight height bf%

i know u dont know ur bf% rite now but i suggest u get it measured professionally. ur lean body mass is what we need to most accurately determine how many cals u need.

i know how it feels to not be able to make progress in the gym and with losing body fat. if u havent already (and u have insurance) i suggest u get ur free testosterone checked. ur prob fine but some of ur symptoms are similar to that of one who is low Test.

i got mine chekd cuz i couldnt drop any fat or gain any muscle and found out it was low. i am now on TRT and it has changed my body composition and my life for the better!

also it looks as though ur not doing enuff cardio. walking is ok but IMO for u rite now u need to be working harder. at 260lbs ur too heavy to run so i suggest once we get ur diet dialed in u find an elliptical and use it man! 5-6 days per week 45mins per day. preferably in the am fasted or post workout.

if u wanna ballpark ur bf% to get the ball rolling until u get ur bf% chekd i suggest posting a pic of urself with no shirt on..

it sounds as though u have a decent idea about proper diet and counting macros so that will def help!

ur gonna wanna build a diet and stick to it every day. while cutting (and really most days) i eat the same things. personally i think if we get ur LBM and a decent deficit and proper diet going u should start seeing some results. if not my best guess would be that there is some other medical issue that needs to be addressed. let me know what u think!

BTW i cut from 213lbs 22%bf to 183lbs 10%bf in 6 months. it can be done!

I have never heard of devils claw, but I will look into that as well. I had a lot of running around to do today, I didn't get a chance to read the stickies on nutrition. I will be looking at them now if I can find them, ok so my stats are 33 years old 260 pounds and 5"10 and my body fat is 32% I just found my papers from when I saw a professional a little while ago just couldn't find them until now. I will see if I can get my testosterone checked someday as well. Now to see if I can post a pic here. God I hope not too many people see it lol. I own an eleptical just never use it, it was given to me and the handles dont have the screws to hold them in. Congrats on your cut btw. I wish I was at 10% bf .

    read this sticky:

    http://forums.steroid.com/showthread...g#.UGdbU03eemg

id ballpark u at 35%bf. its prob not that bad. u say u have 180lbs of LBM which would put u closer to 30%bf. we can go with that and adjust when u get it chekd. GET IT CHEKD SOON. LIKE YESTERDAY!! i dont like guessing and thats what were doing rite now. but i want u to be doing something..

    260 x .70(%LBM) = 182lbs LBM

    rough maintenance: LBM x 15 (182 x 15) = 2730cals

    cut at 2200cals 60/20/20 pro/carb/fat

    2200cals
    330g pro
    110g carbs
    48g fat

Protein: lean beef (96/4 ground), chikn breast, canned tuna, fish, egg whites, 2% or lower cottage cheese, protein powder, etc..

Carbs: oatmeal, brn rice, sweet potatoes, (id stick with these 3 only for awhile. ur not gonna be eating a lot of carbs anyways so it should be easy to do)

Fats: lets see where ur at after u put ur diet together: almonds, peanuts, avocado, EVOO, flax

CARDIO: Elliptical am fasted (or PWO) 45 minutes, 6 days per week, moderate intensity (130-150HR) - personally i prefer am fasted to pwo. with the cardio do the best u can. if u cant do 45mins to start do as much as u can and just keep adding time until u get to 45 mins.

    whats ur weight lifting schedule?

get ur testosterone chekd!!! dont put it off.. if ur low u wanna know. its just a single appointment.. total test AND free test - the free test is the most important.

build a diet hitting these macros and post it for review. keep ur carbs limited to 50g pre and 50g post workout. also have green veggies (spinach, asparagus, broccoli) in at least 2 meals. dont worry about the carbs from the veggies.

GET THAT BF AND TEST DUN DUDE!!!

Hi El. i make all my meals for my work week in one setting on a day off and store in airtight containers. It saves me time throughout the week so I can workout

Cant wait to see what u come up with for a meal plan. I was actually eating more food, just healthy...tons of lean protein and vegtables. And my sugar levels drop significantly

something in my little speech I had is causing it not to go through. Let me try again. I tried to message it to you as well but it wouldn't let me private message anyone either as the option isn't even available for me to look at people's profiles. just tried to copy and paste my little rambling I had and it still won't let me. it basically thinks there's something sexual, or drug related in my post which I can guarantee you doesn't

have you changed any of your settings on this site? maybe click on settings - general settings- and then reset fields. (could be worth a shot)

does seem strange you are getting some posts blocked and other are allowed through.

So are you saying that you tried eating 1600 calories a day, with exercise, and did not lose any weight?

How long did you keep that up for? 1 week? 1 month? 2 days?

Let me get this correct; Are you saying that you are not able to lose weight in a caloric deficit?

3 weeks give or take at 1600 calories with some exercise...yes I do lose weight, problem is if my blood sugars are above 9 or 10 give or take my body will not burn fat whatsoever as it burns the excess sugars first, all my mild exercise did at 1600 calories was burn the sugars and then over the course of 3 weeks I did lose weight, I just couldn't hack for much longer then that as I felt too weak to hold on to such a low calorie intake, sorry if I misworded what I said. I do lose weight at 1600 calories and some exercise providing my carbs are very low and my sugars stay in check, but eventually I feel dizzy and weak on that amount. My goal was not just to lose weight on a low calorie diet with walking. I want the energy to pound the pavement jogging as I truly enjoy it a lot and I wanna be able to weight lift or do P90X sessions without feeling like im gonna faint 20 minutes into it due to improper dieting. Sorry I have a hard time explaining myself at times. I am a much better speaker than I am a writer.

Well I tweaked my fitness pal for those numbers now and bought some new foods to get a better variety rather than always eating the same thing from the ones you listed.
now at 2200 calories that should net me 2lb weight loss roughly a week correct? since 2200 is a 500 cal deficit and I'll likely be burning at least 500 calories from eleptical and P90X? My routine I follow is the P90X one where every other day is weights and in between is cardio. Every morning pre breakfast I drink my vege greens and take my vitamin, fish oil and hit up the eleptical or go jogging. As for traditional weight lifting like in a gym, I honestly don't know if I ever need to go back to that to bulk up as P90X rips you up and has you add a bit of muscle, unless it comes a point where it's not enough? then you'd just use heavier weights or is this routine here better for bulking up someday when I'm lean? It's obvious that P90X is a mix between cardio / weights and has your heart pounding a bit more than doing your typical routine in a gym. I honestly don't know what the real difference is in the end as I know both types of people and they look fantastic.
now my routine here is likely not good, I'm not an expert but this is something I had come up with long ago that I liked. Feel free to criticize it

    day 1 chest & triceps

    bench press x 4
    incline press (dumbells) x4
    flies x 3

    tricep pulldown x3
    tricep extension x3

    --------------------------------------

    day 2 back & biceps

    lat pulldown x4
    seated row x4

    bicep curl (z bar) x3
    alternating dumbell curl x3
    concentration curl x3

    --------------------------------------

    day 3 shoulders

    military press x4
    dumbell overhead press x4
    shrugs x4
    lateral raises x4
the reason I have no legs in with my shoulder workout might be a poor excuse but I pound the pavement 7 days a week when I'm jogging / walking. Might not be nearly as effective for strength as doing squats and other things but my legs are huge and aren't under proportioned so I never bothered actually training them. I wrote day 1 2 and 3 I don't do this 3 days in a row, it's every other day to leave that typical days rest in between.

pounding the pavement is hardly a reason to not do legs. do u have any back issues or leg issues that would keep u from doing legs or any medical reason not to do legs where u would be at risk of injury?

if the answer to this question is "NO" then u need to start doing legs ASAP!!! while ur legs may be big in measurement chances are a fair amount of that is fat. also ur legs are half ur muscle (or maybe more) in ur body. u would be doing urself a great disservice not working them.

bottom line: work ur freaking legs dude! u will not be sorry.

legs: squat, leg curl, leg extension, calf raises (standing or seated). warm up and get 4 working sets of each of these exercises for leg day. personally i like to superset squat with leg extension. makes for a good burn.

wheres ur diet? build it and post it including total cals and macros.

personally P90x IMO is more work than u need to do and its gonna make u dread ur workouts more than likely. i did it for 2 months and quit cuz it freaking sucked and i hated hopping around my living room for an hour or more every day. i was in fairly good shape and struggled to get thru the workouts. IMO it is going to be hard to stick to.

personally i suggest u concentrate on am fasted elliptical 6days per week (before u put anything in ur mouth other than water). no greens, or anything. empty stomach.. and lifting 4 x per week.

    now wheres that diet?

hey El. I was expecting a daily eating plan with macros also

Given your current stats, I think you need to kick up the cardio (but i am a cardio addict ) Did you realize your legs have the largest muscles which means they burn more energy when you work em!!!!!

BTW, I plan to incorporate P90x when I train for the tough mudder. it a tough workout IMO.

First thing first, you should eat more frequently, 4 times a day or more. Eat healthy, avoid junk food. I would also recommend you to follow any Tye 2 diabetes diet, these type of very helpful when you are diagonsed with type 2.
