    Natural PB

So I always see people saying "natural peanut butter" on the thread what ya eatin right now. My girlfriend buys natural, I just buy whatever cause I don't even eat it that often.. I just compared the labels

My PB which is just a no name brand has 1 more gram of sugar than her natural stuff, everything else is the same.

I'm just curious whats the big deal with the natural stuff? Am I missing something that's blatantly obvious?

    Thanks

Palm oil. Usually. It's a vegetable oil but high I saturated fat^^^

Forests/natural habitats are destroyed to grow the crop. It's seen as unethical. Personally I want my PB to be just peanuts with no additives. Like all of my food, where possible.

FYI, peanuts have the potential to be one of the most healthy foods there is. They aren't nuts but legumes. Look up 'aflatoxin'.

You really need to be careful these days.

Initally natural peanut butter used to be strictly peanuts and salt only, this is the kind that will separte into oil and solids and needs to be stirred.

Common peanut butter used to be laden with partially hydrogenated oil this was the stuff full Trans fat.

However now most major brands are using transfat free oils and most "natural" peanut butters are using some form of oil to aid in binding the oils to the solids.

    Whats the answer?

Simple read the label, the only thing you should see is peanuts or peanuts and salt...sadly salt is almost always added but the amounts are usually fairly low.

Oh one other tip, if you do have natty peanut butter and do not refridgerate it then it will stay homogenous (not separate) a lot longer in the jar. I don't know how long its safe to keep it at room temps unrefridgerated but I have never had a problem.
