being vegan, should I take protein supplement?

I need to build a better arm and upper body strength. I'm a woman and have been thin since forever while I've been a vegan for a few years. I'm thinking some basic work-outs and slowly lighter weights. maybe up to 10kg weights maximum(I don't wanna ruin my back and joints). this allows me to lug heavy things around. I'm in no hurry. I don't want bulky upper build but less skinny.

Incidentally, my lower body is not bad-I can walk long distances, and run(sprints but tire fast). so I don't really need to work out for lower body strength.

Never been a sports person as well.

    odi welcome to the forum!

first off i suggest u pm admin and let em know ur a female.. actually ill pm them for u so u can turn pink

secondly i cant advise u a whole lot being a vegan cuz i believe everyone should eat meat, as God intended us to do so. i will say u need protein and u also need a strong body if for no other reason to be healthy and get thru life! you are going to do better with everything u do if ur body is strong. legs, back, upper body, the whole package. do NOT limit the type of exercises u do because u think u dont "need strong legs" or what have you. the truth of the matter in my opinion is: Yes you do! u need strong everything! remember we are all aging and the stronger we are now the better we will do as we get older!

im sure u will also get some female responses here soon.. good luck and i can try to answer any questions

as long as youre eating enough protein to make a good amount of complete protein it shouldnt be an issue. protein isnt just singular thing, its a mixture of amino acids that the body needs in a certain mixture to use, hence the phrase's 'complete protein' and 'incomplete protein'. meat is a good mixture of these aminos, but it doesnt mean that you NEED meat to grow, just that you have to be abit more aware of what you are eating. id sugest looking up how to mix incomplete proteins to make a complete protein.

also, id research how to lift correctly to minimise any tension/damage on any of your joints. once the correct form of lifting and 'full range of motion' is achieved there's not too much tension on your joints, because all the tension is kept on the muscle.

welcome to the board Odi Et Amo.

Being a vegan im sure you know what kind of foods to eat, and I assume you already eat lentils? I was in a supermarket last night and 100 grams of Green Lentils has 25g of protein and 50g of carbs. You should definitely introduce that into your diet if you haven't already. Lentils are also pretty inexpensive.

Sorry i've just re-read your post, you said you've been thin when you were a vegan, is that past tense, or are you still a vegan?

There are some bb who are vegans but few. It can be done and I wish you the best.

    this ^^

search google on vegan complete protein meals, one that i can think of off the top of my head would be baked beans and multigrain bread, or beans and rice (think mexican food), basically pick one ingredient, find out what essential amino acids are in it, and then find another food that has the essential amino acids in it that you are missing from the first food ingredient.

I'm definitely not a Creationist so yeah. I do want to achieve a superfit body like so many people have but I don't think I'll have the time, money nor the perseverance to do that. I would not say I'm not fit but my stamina is not great. Plus I've read what overstraining the body can do to you.

Thank you. I eat all of the above but the Sunwarrior. It's exxy. But I've bought soy protein powder instead.

Actually I was never a huge eater of beef, or other red meat. I did eat chicken then. The harder bit is leaving all the seafood behind and eggs/ I do love fish, crabs, prawns....

Sometimes stuff do sneak into my food that are not vegan, and my clothes and shoes aren't really. But when I'm buying groceries or eating out I'll think about how I'm reducing torture. After all many animals have developed nervous system and nociceptive afferents(pain receptors) too similar to us.
But that's not my primary reason-the truth is even as a kid the idea of eating animal flesh grossed me out. Often I threw the meat out, which understandably pissed my dad off so I learned to be sneaky about it I guess some people would consider me squeamish and weak.
