As for sit-ups/an work making you look fatter - I disagree on this as well. Developing abs, to me, is making them 'pop'. They're a relatively small muscle group and are only going to get so big. That thick waisted 'barrely' look a lot of pro's have is not the result of ab work, assuming that's the 'fat' look you're referring to (I don't like that look either).
Having said that, I wouldn't go nuts working them. Once, maybe 2 times per week is plenty - and 10 billion reps isn't necessary either. They're a muscle... treat em' as such.
