How important are macro's?
How important are macros? Do we really need to count them? Or is it ok as long as your eating clean? I can put on mass by eating more brown rice and wheat bread then when I would like to cut up I Would only eat my carbs in the morning and post workout. Never got my bf down to 8% best would be around 10%. And when I Would bulk i'll be around 15-16%
Little background
Iv been lifting for 6 yrs 3yrs consistently, and never really counted macros in my diet, A little background on me im 25 and used to be an amatuer basketball player here in Philippines.
Stats:
25 yrs old
6'4"
200lbs
12-14% bf
I want to get big with around 220lbs and be like around 10-12% bf.
Any advise on nutrition would be open.

Franny - I'm going to use this thread to give you a fair warning (sorry OP, but it's necessary) - I can promise you that if you come here with 'guns blazing' the way you are now, your stay here will be short. We're well aware of IIFYM and the like, and don't need parrots like you (let's be honest) coming over here pushing your agenda. To be honest, I'm bored to death with the topic and am not going to get into it. I'm also not going to dignify your ridiculous comments (milk and donuts) with a scientific response. IIFYM as it was intended is a sound dieting philosophy. It's guys like you who give it a bad name.
You've been warned. Keep up the trolling and you'll be gone fast, I promise.Last edited by gbrice75; 04-02-2013 at 07:49 AM.

Thing is, most people cutting aren't going to have room for donuts and pizza and shit like that once they've hit their macros, making the entire 'pop tarts and ice cream' mantra a moot point. Sure, if you've hit your macros and wind up with 50g carbs and some fat to spare, enjoy yourself. Have that donut or whatever. THAT'S what IIFYM is about - fulfilling your macros with healthy foods, hitting micronutrient and fiber goals (which is impossible to do with donuts, pop tarts, and ice cream), and then enjoying any surplus.
Conversely, one could fulfill their protein requirement with shakes and then hit their fat/carb macros with junk food. Do you REALLY think they'll wind up with the same body composition (all else being equal) as the person eating a relatively healthy diet w/ some junk thrown in here and there? Gimme a break!!Last edited by gbrice75; 04-02-2013 at 09:32 AM.

Mate
Sometimes, when attempting to join a community that has been together, and you are the new guy, sometimes it's better to sit back and assess the lay of the land, than it is to try and shove your weight around, and making statements that show us how little you know.
Sometimes it's better to keep one's mouth closed and keep us guessing at what you know...
....than it is to open one's mouth so that we know how little you do know!
We are all here to learn. But if you keep talking, you are not doing any listening.

Ok guys so now I know that macros are important. Im currently in india and diet has been a mess im going back to Philippines in 20 days so I taking this time to learn.
My question is what macro split would you guys recommend?
Protein/carbs/fat=
40/40/20?
50/30/20?
60/20/20?
I would like to bulk and minimize fat gain as much as possible. Any other suggestions are welcome
Thanks!

Hah, surely calorie us not a calorie and never was. Net caloric balance is highly dependent on the macro split - body stores dietary fats most easily while 25% of protein cals is utilized for processing. Matching macros is totally diff thing, but how could u possibly hit ur macros with junk? No way.
