    Artificial Sweeteners on a diet. Do we have to ditch those too??

    So, in an effort to get myself looking pretty for bikini-season, I was reading an article from a friend in "Shape" magazine.
    All of the ideas are pretty standard, but one has me worried - The advice to lose the artificial sweeteners:

    If it wasn't for A.S., my diet wouldn't exist! I don't drink diet soda anymore, but I use splenda in 3+ cups of coffee a day, and lots of other stuff. Crystal-lite, sugar free syrup, protein powder, - EVERYTHING! Am I really "sabotaging my weight-loss goals??"

    What do you guys think?

    I am interested in the responses. Seems reasonable but saw in another thread that other members have lost bf and increased lean muscle and do drink diet sodas.....

    There is alot of conflicting information regarding sweetners, personally I drink diet pop, it has to my knowledge had no negative effect on my attempt to lose bodyfat.

    Those "studies" are a bunch of crap imho.

    The action of chewing alone has been shown to secrete insulin production.

    If sugar free soda increases insulin levels to the same extent that its hfcs counterpart does (which it doesn't) they would have cited the study.

    And please stop reading Shape magazine.

    I was really sure about this too... I've just cut 20 pounds in 3 months, and practically all I eat is artificial sweetener. WTH would I do without SlimmerMe's pancakes??

    I don't doubt that artificial sweeteners cause an insulin response, pretty much anything does including no sugar gum.

    But does it create enough insulin secretion to matter? I don't think so.

    Whether or not some of the artificial sweeteners are good for us is an entirely different matter. I try to stick with truvia whenever possible which I think is the lesser of all the evils.

    If I'm not mistaken I believe u get an insulin response at a time when ur body is used to eating if ur in a regular schedule. Hunger will increase insulin as well. But like sarge said, not enough to matter. And if it was I'd b one fat fvcker cuz I drink the hell out of diet dr pepper, mainly because it only has 55mg per 20oz of sodium. That's what gets ya with the diet drinks, the sodium!

    i drink 24-64oz diet soda per day and have 1/2 gallon of coffee with 10 stevia packets (LOL) every day! without fail.. im still 10%bf and i started at 27%bf.. whats that tell u?? personally i have read some disturbing stuff on splenda and prefer stevia, of which i have read decent stuff.

    my .02: dont sweat diet soda dude.. im living proof!

    Sweet. I'm a Diet Coke addict. Only reason I'm not drinking the hell out of that as well is because I'm really poor these days. That habit gets expensive.

    You might want to check your "stevia" packs again. They are NOT stevia! Or at least the main ingredient is not stevia. Go take a look at the ingredients and let me know what you find....

    Don't be fooled by the cost. I purchased 1 kilo ( or was it a pound) for $50. But that was almost a year ago, and still have some left. A little goes a looooong way

    I take enough vitamins, minerals, and a protein shake + create shake everyday!

    I don't want to put more stress on my liver or kidneys... diet cokes have no nutrition benefit and I only drink it if I am to a social gathering... and have to drink something else instead of water!! just to be social accepted!!!

    Instead I have an awesome Pro powder for my shake.. I eat nuts and dark chocolate every day... and if I want something sweet I will eat or drink it right after my work out (I never really have craving for sweets, so it's rare), but if I have I will do it post work out!!

    I don't want to fill my body with aspatarme and other hormone-disturbing substances... at least not with out any nutritional benefits!!

    However if diet coke does have value for your life.... drink it... it's your life.. but doesn't change the fact that it has no postive effect and if you are serious about gains you should really consider giving it up!!

    Personally, I drink roughly 1 diet soda (aspartame sweetened) a day. I don't even think twice about it. When I can control the artificial sweetener content, I use Stevia. But I enjoy a can of Coke Zero here and there too. Moderation guys. Drinking a 6 pack a day (arbitrary number) probably wouldn't be the best approach, but a can of soda/day isn't going to make or break anything. The only exception where I'd give it up completely would be contest prep. Other than that, I'll continue enjoying my life with a few (very) simple pleasures.

    Well, this is where I start to wonder... I know there is TONS of Bro-Science out there making these claims. But I keep coming back to the idea that there aren't any (double-blind, Scientific method, peer reviewed, etc.) studies out there which show any of the supposed detriment to be fact that I am aware of.
    However, the flip-side is EVERYTHING in moderation. Not like I slam a 6-pack daily and eat the stuff right out of the packet, but it REALLY makes dieting easier.

    probably save 400-600 calories a day in all (coffee, oatmeal, shakes...)

    I've personally ditched Splenda in favor of Stevia. I used to use a TON of the stuff, and am just not convinced it's 100% safe, so I decided to err on the side of caution. That's just me though.

    Truvia is nothing more than a brand of Stevia. Stevia is the actual 'product'. Truvia, Purevia, etc. are simply brands, so i'm not sure what you were comparing before brother, lol!



    I am going to have to disagree with you on that one.......I think in my opinion there is significant difference for comparison. Have you tried both products??? I have tasted the Stevia in The Raw as well as Truiva......two totally different taste. One is more bitter (Stevia) and the other is more sweet (Truiva). And although they both are derived from the Stevia leaf, the Stevia product is more derived from the actual Stevia leaf by itself to what I understand, which is very bitter in taste. The Truvia is made out of a derivative of the Steiva leaf (Rebiana, which is a patented process for a chemically made extract from steeping the Stevia leaf). The Truvia also has added in with it erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol that I am sure knocks out the bitter taste that the Stevia in The Raw has.

    True, they are very similar......but are made in two different ways and do not carry the same taste profile. I guess that is where my comparison came in.

    Everything I want/need sweetened. Oats, baked stuff, protein shakes, etc.

    In your OP, you didn't reference Stevia In The Raw (which is another brand, and yes, a product closer to the plant found in nature vs. Truvia/Purvia), you compared Stevia to Truvia... in which case it could be said Truvia IS Stevia.[/QUOTE]

    I would be more cocerend with what that stuff is doing to your brain and organs.

    Aspartame, equal, sweetn low that shit will cause brain cancer, plus many other internal problems.

    But again life is short so enjoy it while its here.

    Aspartame is a down right poison. I have banned it from my cabinets based on tons of studies I have read. Not sure where your reading from but I have many sources and studies to choose from. http://aspartame.mercola.com/

    Haha I was thinking the same thing. I'm not gonna sacrifice quality of life over something so trivial as this.

    I drink at least one coke zero and most of the time more everyday and put truvia in my shakes and other stuff.

    If it takes 2 years off my life fvck it I'll be old and won't have shit to do anyway. Artificial sweetener is the least of my concern of all the stuff i put in my body......
