Calculating the "Protein Efficiency" of various products & supplements
I see these "what's the best protein" threads all the time. I just replied to one in another sub-forum, so I figured I'd paste it here.
It's pretty easy to figure out the best value, and the most protein per dollar for whatever you want to use.
To find the amount of protein in a product:
Take the amount of protein (grams)in one serving and divide it by the serving size (in grams).
This is the percentage of protein in the product. The rest is filler (sweetener, flavoring and other crap).
To find the best VALUE:
Multiply the number of servings in the container by the grams in each serving. This gives you the total amount of product
Then take the total cost of the product, and divide it by the total amount of product.
This gives you the dollar per gram (or ounce, whatever)
Using these, one can figure out the most efficient way to stock up on expensive protein to meet their goals.
One can also use these to figure out the "Protein Efficiency" of milk, Cottage cheese, egg white products, etc.
Using the formula, it's pretty easy to figure out that any protein powder you get is less expensive than "real" protein (eggs, meat, cottage cheese, etc.) BUT ya GOTTA have REAL protein! remember, powders are called a SUPPLEMENT for a reason.
Here are two I've figured out as tough to beat using the above formulas.
Species Nutrition Isolyze has the most protein/least amount of filler per serving of any I've found, and I LOVE the taste. It's also REALLY expensive.
10 LB. Dymatize Elite is the best VALUE (dollar per gram of protein) of any I've found based on what I pay for it. Not sure I can post where and how much here though.

Anything above 90% is good in my eyes, I've seen some powders with a ratio of around 70%, which is bullshit
Why couldn't you post about the cost of protein? Its not an illegal substance...or is it...

I am pretty sure the ''price talk'' rule on this board doesn't apply to supplements, which are legal products everywhere.
Dymatize ISO-100 is good stuff. I have been using it for almost a year and I have to say, I will probably continue to use it until I come across with something I like more, which seems like a remote possibility at the moment.

I'd rather have the Species Nutrition stuff, it tastes the best of any I've found. But DAMN it's expensive! Dymatize whey isolate doesn't taste nearly as good, but I just add a few packets of splenda and it's fine.

I'll try it. I'm a chocolate freak, but hey, variety is good! The chocolate is pretty bland, I usually add a lot of sweetener, but I can see how vanilla might be better that way.
