Do you wash/rinse your rice before cooking?

So much conflicting info. Some say only imported rice should be washed. Some say it has to do with cleanliness of the rice, others say it's to prevent the rice from becoming sticky?

What's the deal? I rather eat brown rice usually, does this apply to brown rice?

I always wash my rice before cooking it. Measure out how much I need and put it in a bucket with water, agitate it a bit and rinse off. I know many people who don't wash it first but I do as my grandmother taught me

I do. But I use basmati (white and brown) and that is recommended to wash anyway. Doesn't take long it's not a chore.

I rinse my brown rice a couple times in the pot that goes in the rice cooker.

Thanks guys. I'm really interested to know why you wash the rice.

Should rice be rinsed before cooking?
Definitely. Get rid of natural-living notions that you are washing away precious nutrients when you rinse rice. The amount lost is minimal. Rinsing rice actually rids the grains of surface starches, prevents clumping, and yields a clean, fresh taste. Whether you are rinsing the rice in a pan, a rice cooker insert, or a bowl, use plenty of water and always start by stirring the rice in circles with your fingers or by rubbing it gently between your palms to loosen the starches.
Should rice be rinsed until the water runs clear?
No. The water actually NEVER gets clear. It starts out opaque and cloudy and becomes less murky. Aim to repeatedly rinse the rice with fresh water until the water is nearly clear. If you use a precise water-to-rice ratio, drain the rice in a sieve before putting it in the pan.
I was always told it was to make sure the rice is clean and that it removes some of the excess starch off the rice.

I love basmati rice. Really strange though... I can't seem to get full. Not sure why.

I think it doesn't 'fluff' up as much. I'd use the word plump but fluff sounds much better. It fills me ok but then, I eat no less than 110g each time (about 4oz uncooked)

I just ate a cup of Basmati and I'm starving. Plenty of fiber with it too. I can eat 3 to 4 cups probably. Sucks. Same calories as anything else. Just tastes better.

Washing rice is mainly.used for sushi style rice. Although can be implemented for any rice. Basically same technique used for homemade "french fries". Its the process of washing all thw statch out.

    Personally never wash any rice.

Although if you are a bean person. Most beans...need to be washed and even soaked over night before cooking.

I wash it. It's important to not just rinse it but rinse it under running water until the water runs through the rice and comes out clear. It keeps the rice from being sticky. There is a powdery starch coating whole rice grains. That's what makes it gummy/sticky. Brown or white. Same-same as the vietnamese say.
