What are your thoughts on energy drinks?

Any of you drink Red Bull, Monster or the like? I usually drink one every morning before hitting the gym and then another mid day.

Meh. Not for me. Back in 2000/2001 I used to buy Red Bull by the case. Multiple cases at a time in fact. I drank 10 to 12 daily. That's a case every 2 days.

Today my only drink is coffee. Quite a bit of coffee. But there's just too much sugar in these energy drinks. The ones that taste good at least. If you're drinking 1 or 2 a day, it's fine. Just don't do what I did back in the day....

I always drink the sugar free kind. The regular ones are too sweet.

Yeah. If it makes you feel good, go for it. But there's no real nutritional benefit from them.

I've been drinking them for years. Now they tear my stomach up and give me agita. My favorite is Spike. Small, double caffeine and taste like cherry.

I came off my mototbike last year , broke my wrist , was off work had nothing better to do than game , eat sh1t and go through 8-10 monsters a day .

In like 8 weeks I gained almost 2 stone in fat . ( all gone now)

I heard on supersize vs superskinny that like 4 red bulls are the same as a whole forest fruit gatau . ( not sure how true)

A friend of mine just passed a kidney stone the size of a pea. I have no doubt the main cause was the large amounts of energy drinks he consumes.

**** no! I always see these teenagers guzzling them, usually during a hangover. Unsurprisingly they look like the walking dead.

Those things are full of crap. Unfortunately it's not cool to drink coffee though.

I want to revive this post to ask if the advice given saying they are bad for is relevant to the sugar free ones as well? I tried a sugar-free rockstar today and as I was looking in the ingredients I couldn't really find anything terribly wrong with them. They have sucralose in them as the sweetener. Caffeine amount was 160mg in the entire can and zero calories. Carbs and calories were virtually non-existent.

Funny you revived this one as I was just reading a paper on this a couple of days ago. I, personally, have cut all this stuff out because it simply makes me feel better not having it. I was also wondering about the effects of the sugar free sweetener and how it effects my cravings as I notice a DRAMATIC difference when not having these drinks, with or without sugar.

Here is a paper I thought was interesting. I am not using it as any proof of anything only that it correlates to my own experience.

The effect of non-caloric sweeteners on cognition, choice, and post-consumption satisfaction

As long as its sugar free, I say go for it.. To me, it just not worth it. Considering they charge like 3 dollars for the small ones where i live. I usually stick to coffee in the morning. A cup or two. Or i get a large, black, iced coffee, with two sweet and low, at Dunkin Donuts. That probably my favorite. Once in a blue, I will admit, I do buy a sugar free Red Bull.

Any thoughts on black coffee for those caffeine lovers! 2 cups a day vs 2 pots a day.

This is very interesting. However, after drinking another one today I have given it much more thought. If I were on a cutting diet I would probably drink them because they do not have any calories, I love the caffeine high, and it will help fill me up.

I came to the conclusion today when planning my diet for the week. I am bulking, well, I am transitioning to bulking. I am working my way back up to eating 300-500 over my TDEE, which is HARD right after you've been cutting or at TDEE.

The problem with them I have on bulking is I am essentially drinking them, they make me feel pretty full, and I am not getting calories from them. I am already struggling to eat over my TDEE and I do not need extra liquids in there making stuffing my face that much harder.

Maybe once I get comfortable eating well over my TDEE again I could make some room for one but I don't see the drink being that important for now. The only thing I like is the huge rush I get from them since I do not consume much caffeine.

so which is it with you?

    2 cups or 2 pots?

2 cups would be fine, but anything taken to extreme over long periods of time could not be good:

    enamel on your teeth
    blood pressure
    resting pulse rate

....and the fact that this much caffeine is addictive like any other stimulant.

if you want to get stimulated, just close your eyes, click your heals together and say three times...

    Tmes Roman...

    Times Roman...

    Times Roman...

This incantation has been known to make many a woman's heart rate go up! =)

I used to drink red bull, then I transitioned onto red bull sugar free/zero cals (because I loved the taste). However I found that since they have no sugar I didn't get that little pre workout buzz that I craved for so I'm currently drinking coffee (something I detest) with a crapload of milk in it.

Slowly cutting out that milk as I learn to tolerate it but the main difference I've noticed since stopping the red bull is that my wallet seems happier
