Discussion: Do you REALLY know what a macro nutrient is?

Serious discussion. And for those of you who do know beyond any doubt, hold off on giving the answer just for a bit. And you Google ninja's out there, same goes for you. I'm trying to gain an understanding of how many of us really understand at it's core what a carbohydrate is, what protein is, and what fat is. I don't mean an explanation that simply gives an example of a list of items that contain these items. But an even deeper understanding.

My woman is starting the Atkins, and told me she is NOT eating ANY carbs. And then she starts eating yogurt and almonds. I asked her this same question, and she does not really understand. She has a list of "good" foods and a list of "bad" foods. Her diet breaks down due to a lack of true understanding of these basic concepts.

I want to find out from some of us, if her lack of knowledge is widespread and common, or not.

I get so frustrated when I see her eat, and I ask her, why are you eating that? and she replies, "what is wrong with it?" because she doesn't really grasp what macro nutrients are.

So i'll turn the ball over to you. What do you blokes think?

I'm starting to look at Keto as way of eating and see what/how my body responds. This past week, I ate all fats/protein, and maybe had 20-30g of total carbs, and I felt the same energy wise I guess. I am going to toy with it as I have always had carbs in my diet so want to see how my body responds to not having them. Should be interesting.

some people can tolerate the no/low carb thing while lifting. For me, it's an either/or. No problem avoiding carbs, UNLESS I'm also lifting, which is always. I had one successful run with the Atkins years ago, when I was a fat ass and not lifting.

Exactly, more fat to burn, like me!

Tarmyg put on a book called: The Art and Science of Low Carb Performance. I have read 5 chapters thus far, so still have some to read but willing to give it a try to see how my body responds. Good read so far and I think I ordered it off amazon pretty cheap.

    TR,

What this got me going on, except for the fact that I only have a simplistic and basic understanding of the subject, is how nutrients are taken up by the body. I have thought about it more due to your posts about moving from one type of carbs to another and what effect that have had on your body. This lead me to the following review article (I am still digesting it, no pun intended) and was hoping that might help you in why the different carbs are acting the they they are. I do not think it have an answer but clues to one.

Protein is the building block of things like muscle, hair and connective tissue?

Carbohydrates are the preferred energy source for the body, excess carbs convert to fat.

Fat is the secondary source of energy, and is stored over carbohydrates for when there's no carbs to burn?

Not sure how in depth you're looking for but that's my general knowledge of them haha

Proteins - made from amino acids , synthesized by ribosomes , u can find them in the cell itself and in the cell's membrane ,there are 20 essential ones that our bodies can't synthesize.
Carbs - sources of energy ,various cycles which they go trough to get to that energy, there are simple and complex ones , extra ones u consume get converted to fat for later use.
Adipose tissue(fat) - energy deposit of our body , fat cells are impossible to remove , they increase or decrease in size depending on the amount of *extra energy * u consume.

This is a shortest possible explanation of 3 macro nutrients that our body needs , now them being macro doesn't mean they are any more important than micro nutrients , but they are bigger. - Source - I'm stuying molecular biology

Recently I was driving with a taxi , when the driver asked me what I'm studying , when i told him he was like "Oh molecules , they are something like little balls that rotate, right?". - And that's the knowledge from the 7th grade ...people skip the basics way too often

Maybe you should start a thread on it after you are finished? Summarize and highlight?

I have a decent understanding, but not excellent. I just get frustrated when I have to explain over and over to my woman when I see her eating carbs and she is thinking she isn't. Plus she is stubborn so she won't listen too well when I try and explain. Which eventually leads to a communication breakdown and frustration.........

Tr. u think like a guy and approach reflects a deep misunderstanding of the female intellect.

Never deliver nutrition information to a wife unless she needs to add/gain.

Never deliver information to the stubborn woman

Your woman will receive info freely without question from gf or other confidant

    Tish tish tish noob mistake

I know this intuitively. Men are from mars and women are from some other fukked up place.

But I too am human and get frustrated.

I've even asked her to ask her mom on some things, she'll listen to her mom.

But I don't want a life partner that grows over time. She was so thin up until about 2003. Then the earth shifted on it's axis and I've been bewildered ever since.

If u ask her to ask her mom, aren't u still instructing a stubborn woman :/

I want my health. The physically appealing aspect is a bonus. I feel better, confidence builder etc.

    what's your woman's motivation?

Nutrition awareness is like discovery. I wanted to loose weight but I didn't know what I was actually consuming so I logged 7 typical days on myfitnesspal Shocking. Shocking. I knew I needed to make a change and then slowly learned more. Then joined and bcame More familiar.

It's a process that has to start from within. Be supportive. Answer when asked.

I've tried everything. Leading by example. Indirectly through our children (they both are leading a healthy lifestyle). I've been passive aggressive. Aggressive aggressive. Stony quiet. Informative. Educational. Humorous. I've tried dropping the subject for a year or two. I've tried the health aspect. I seem to be gaining some traction this time. Her mom has pancreatic cancer, and so did her aunt. It runs in families. I told her not to make me a widow before my time. she needs to get healthy.

I was in the middle of an argument with the 2nd wife once and said that except I added; you are even further away than Venus, you are from Uranus. Once the words came out I realized what I said and just started laughing. She didnt think it was as funny as I did.
