    Sm red potatoes...

    So what do you guys/gals think of this as my carb for a couple meals - I've not been able to find good sweet potatoes in a couple wks(here and there).. So I'm trying this recipe - it's for 5lbs of potatoes... Thoughts??

    Roasted red potatoes - tossed in Olive oil minced garlic salt(less than teaspoon) -

    good stuff we eat red potatoes in my house pretty good in stews

    I eat Reds all the time. Supposed to be better on the Glycemic Index than Idaho or Russets. Not as good as Sweet Potatoes but taste is better.

    Your recipe sound about like mine. I make single or double serving. Dice it and put it in a metal pan covered with foil and throw it on the grill when I cook my chicken. The bottom gets a little carmalized or burnt but it brings a whole new flavor to it. I do the same with cauliflower and it almost tastes like popcorn when it's burnt.

    Hmm. Never thought about it, I wonder how the reds and cauliflower would be grilled in a pan together. Best thing about reds, they are small. A 4oz red (pre cooked) is 100 calories, 20 carbs and 4 protein. Easy to track.

    Yeah I almost broiled em that's how hot - and it carmalized crispified it lol - just threw it the oven - thx for that split BrettN that's easy(only if I remembered how many diced equals one lol) the garlic makes it

    We eat Red Potatoes pretty often in the house. Sometimes we cook them like BrettN said with the Chicken (makes it easy). They taste great if you throw them in the oven (450 degrees) put some olive oil, pepper, garlic, put it all in a lipped pan, cut side down. Sometimes we cut up some red and green peppers and toss them in too. Cook for 20-30 min. Tastes awesome. You're right though man - garlic makes it.

    I always thought there is not that much difference between red potatoes and sweet potatoes other than flavor. The difference is very minimal. I would run with them as long as your not putting a bunch of bad stuff in them to make more desirable. That's what's nice about sweet potatoes cook eat taste good simple.

    I eat only sweet potatoes if any. Red potatoes are my next choice.

    Yes they are(not in season - ive been finding them sparingly) but am liking the red potatoes, however they don't seem as filling either but are very good(roasted w/minced garlic)

    Sorry GGR I didn't see your post - im in the same boat as Bio when coming to sweet potatoes(about 1-1.5 months so far) but was even worse a little while ago!

    Red potatoes are great. I'm a big fan of red bliss variety. The idea of sweet potatoes being better for you because they are lower on the glycemic index is a total myth. If you want to pick it up another level add some rosemary in alongside your olive oil and garlic.

    I understand your point, but saying "why not just get all needed carbs from sugar" is a bit extreme. Potatoes are healthier than refined sugar on a macro and micro level.

    The GI index was created for those suffering from diabetes. All of the foods measured in the GI are tested in a fasted state under carbs alone. When carbs are consumed with fat, fiber and protein ther GI is lowered considerably. Furthermore, some low GI foods act as high GI foods after ingestion. Milk (30) is lower on the GI than white bread (70), but both produce the same insulin response. Ice cream (36) is much lower than an apple (80). This doesn't mean that ice cream is healthier than an apple. GI numbers are inaccurate.

    I'm not saying to avoid high GI foods altogether. As with all facets of life balance is key. People who pay special attention to the GI of a food and think that it will help their waistline don't realize that their efforts are better spent elsewhere.

    It's asinine to base your diet around numbers that were assigned to foods meant for fasting diabetics. Whether one eats sweet potatoes vs. white potatoes or brown rice vs. white rice has little to do with the way in which one looks. This game is about an entire lifestyle not comparing various carbs to glucose.

    If you look at the nutrition facts, in my opinion red potatoes are a better choice than sweet potatoes.
    100g red potatoe:
    89 Cal
    20g carbs, of which 1g is sugar and 2g is fiber

    100g Sweat Potatoes:
    90 cal
    21g Carbs, of which 6g is sugar and 3g is fiber

    Little late to the party but even try switching it up...

    I used to get white sweet potatoes

    Also a great potato (or root) to go something like flank steak is boniato.

    We use red potatoes at work everyday...30-50# a day....so I have had to take a break from them lol.
