    Poor Hormonal Fat Girls

    Hi,

Sorry for the provocative title, I just wanted to get your attention. :P

With regards to losing weight, does it always come down to being in a caloric deficit state? I was watching a youtube video and the guy says that hormones are more important than counting calories. He said you need to understand hormones such as insulin, growth hormone, testosterone, cortisol, estrogen. I know steroids are hormones and also affect hormones, but I'm talking more about hormones in non steroid users. Would it also be sexist to assume this is more of an issue for woman as they are more "hormone" prone? :/ lol.

The guy in the video made the example of woman in third world countries, where food is scarce, yet most of them are very obese. It's also the same with some woman foreigner beggars, who ask for money in the streets. They all seem really overweight.

    1) Why is this the case for these 2 types of people (particularly woman)?

    2) Is it that they are in a high caloric surplus all the time, or is it that their diets are bad which are affecting their hormones?

I am trying to help my female friend who is overweight, by looking at her diet and making sure she is in a caloric deficit state. The video just made me question my own knowledge and whether I have all the facts regarding weight gain/loss and whether hormones is an area I need to look into more.

Yes, calorie deficit would be among the most important factors.

    Excerpt from Guardian:
"Future Diets, an analysis of public data about what the world eats, says there are almost twice as many obese people in poor countries as in rich ones. The growing rates of overweight and obesity in developing countries are alarming."

Hormones play a role, but small fluctuations in them like what you eat cause mean next to nothing. At the end of the day it's calories in vs calories out for the average person.

I have to agree with previous members responses with one minor exception. Certain drugs/ medicine can contribute to weight gain.

The Pill is an example. And I ended switching out to a physical barrier birth control method bc the pill made me bloated.

Metabolism also plays a role. Some ppl are easy gainers ( pick me pick me lol) And some ppl struggle to keep weight on.

But the most important thing is proper diet and training. Consistency over time

One other mention. Check portions. Unless she is weighting food, she's probably eating more then she thinks

Ok, so hormones and drugs play a minimalist role, but calories and metabolism are the main protagonists.

Metabolism is your BMR. This leads me on to a question regarding metabolism:

    1) Is BMRrelated to your TDEE, in the sense of, I have a very high metabolism (hard to put on weight), so my TDEE would be higher than someone with a low metabolism and therefore a lower TDEE?

    2) how do I speed up a BMR? Smaller food portions, eating more regularly throughout the day? Weight training as muscle needs more energy so more muscle is higher BMR? More exercise?

Hormones and drugs play a small role for the lamen, for someone with medical issues or the like it could play a much larger role.

BMR is what you'll burn through the day if you do absolutely nothing, your bodies natural rate of using energy just to stay alive. TDEE is affected by the amount of food you eat, drugs you take and exercise you engage in.

Speeding up your BMR isn't really going to happen to a great degree, food has a thermogenic effect, so the amount of food you eat will determine the calories you burn just from eating that food, not the regularity of meals. Extra muscle makes a difference especially since you're body has to work harder just to survive. Other than that there's just drugs and exercise, both of which will raise your TDEE but not you BMR.

How does BMR and TDEE tie in then when bulking/cutting? I only use my TDEE to help bulk/cut. What is BMR actually useful for? Steady, consistent diet and recording food (calorie counting for TDEE) seem to be the best form of bulking/cutting.

BMR is just your basal metabolic rate, not really used for anything except to complete the equation to find what your TDEE is.

The TDEE calculators I used didn't ask for them.

BMR is an estimate of how many calories you would burn if you slept all day.

The only way to empty a fat cell is a caloric estimate.

They figure out an estimate for themselves.
