    dehydrator for yams

Is it a good idea to get a dehydrator to make yam chips?

I am getting tired of eating baked yams.

Based on whatever information I found online it seems like it doesn't take away the nutrition from the foods.

I can bake yams with no seasoning or oil - sounds like a great idea.

Please let me know your thoughts.

sounds delicious to me man. a little sea salt on them i bet they would be awesome That slight sweet they have with a slight salt taste. I would tear them up LOL
I know essentially nothing about food dehydrators you just got my attention with a snack that sounds great. In fact there is a company that makes vegtable chips that are sold in convenience store around me. They comes in a black bag and I have had sweet potato chips and also veggie chips, like all healthy root vegetable like yams and sweet potatos and I think something like parsnips. I know they aret fried so they are either baked of dehydrated and they are awesome just way expensive, if you could use a dehydrator and make your own it would be on man.
Please let us know if you try this and if so what dehydrator you got and hot it worked out.

Think you're talking about Terra Chips. Jimmy. They are expensive, but very good. My wife has been tinkering with dehydrating thinly sliced sweet potatoes in the dehydrator we bought @ Walmart.
She hasn't got it down it down pat yet but is working on it. The last batch she made, she dehydrated them, laid them out on a plate, lightly spritzer them with olive oil, put them in a big freezer bag, threw some cinnamon and Splenda, and shook the hell out of the bag to coat the chips.
If she gets the process down pat, I'll post up what she does. Those Terra Chips are really good though. There is one of the veggies in it that is particularly sweet. Don't know if it was parsnip or what, but defo good eating.
There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

I think you are talking about terra chips and veggie straws.

I looked into dehydrators - it's a 15-20 hour process to make one batch. I eat 400-500 yams a day so I will need a commercial size - lol

I am gonna order something in a week or so - I really want to try it.

In the meantime I used the normal oven to make these with no salt or oil. It's not something to drool over but it's a great alternative to get extra calories easily.

How many chips can it roughly make and how long does it take? The one I saw at Walmart doesn't have a good capacity.
