    Yes Yes

You need it all the time and you really need to understand why your body needs protein and how it is used by your body. This is a debate that gets recycled at least once a month all I can suggest is that you find some books up/magazine articles and research it

    Hope it helps bro

    Bump for Billy!

So many takes on this one.

    My take:
ALWAYS consume at least 0.8g/lb of bodyweight no matter what the goal

Bulking - 1.5-3g/lb. Since you are consuming excess carbs anyway, your body will more efficiently use the excess protein specifically for muscle building since its getting all the carbs for fuel. Especially true when juiced

Cutting - Depends on the diet, but generally 1.2 - 2/lb. Lower carbs = upped prot and fat. It all depends.

2g per lb of body weight when bulking - never more than 50-60g in a sitting and at 1.5-2hr intervals

I believe in consuming around 200g p/day and I weigh around 240. I am going to hit a diet for a month and was wondering how much I will need. You hear so many diff. opinions on it, I was just trying to hear from guys who have dieted on this board and what they have done.

I'll be honest, I think for a 240 guy, eating 240+grams of protein p/day is insane (unless bulking).
I can't get all that protein in if I'm trying to keep my cals under 2000.
So I'm thinking 2000/200/150.....cals/carbs/proteins for my daily.
    What do you think?
    What has worked for you?

Cleveland, trust us here. If you are dieting you need to switch those ratios around. You NEED at least 1g protein per pound of bodyweight. This is especially true if you want to hang on to any of that muscle while in a caloric deficit. And dont forget you need to be taking in some fat too. I didnt see that anywhere in your ratio. And beleive me, its not that hard to get in 300g of protein a day on a 2000 calorie diet (which by the way sounds a bit drastic for your bodyweight). Let me put it this way: I only weigh about 145lb right now and I easily consume 200g protein a day.

If you arent getting your protein in, you WILL lose a ton of muscle on your diet.

Your body needs protein as well as fat and carbs.Protein is what repairs your muscles I would say the minimum amount you need is 240g @ 240 lbs

OK lets blast through the theory, we all know that. Lets talk about fact:

Are you improving in the gym? Yes/No
Does DOMS last three to four days? Yes/No
    Are you Growing Yes/No

Ok the list goes on but the answers to the above questions give you an indication if your are fulfilling you body's protein requirement.

    IMO!

I,m not flaming anyone here but a lot of guys seem to now their stuff in the gym and what they should be doing outside diet wise but I get the impression they don,t know why they do it.

It is really important that you understand the simple principles of the three basics of your diet Protein Carbs and Fat and why they are consumed the way that they are.

I,m willing to write all this up but this is very easy to research and learn and forms the fundamentals of your BB success. If you guys want this all to be covered in one post let me know and any ideas maybe we could all work together and make it one post that sits at the top for all newbies to read.

Let me know what you think

Needless to say, I am willing to try 240g p/day.
I didn't list fat intake because that is secondary to me, whatever extra calories AREN'T listed = fats.
Ex: 2000/200/150.....fats would have to equal about 70g or 600cals.

    Your right, that is high.
My carbs will probably be a little higher, maybe 250g with my fats being lower, about 40-50g.
I'm all over the place with this thing!

All I do know really is that I'm going to have to consume between 1500 and 2000 cals p/cay to lose weight at 240 lbs.

    Cool protien a must!

I am 210 right now and I do my utmost to take 350-450gms of protien a day. now when dieting for competition I still take in around 300gms a day.adjust your carbs and fat around protien intake, and don't forsake fat in your diet it is very important for uping that naturally test production. carbs are for energy and getting your insulin to push that other good stuff you eat into your muscles but you don't have to eat alot of it because remember you are on a diet!

ive had as high as 500grams daily.

Mike hit it pretty much dead on as did many other guys, protein cannot be stored so must be comsumed frequently and in smaller amounts. A rule of thumb is to keep meals under 50grams but this can change depending on many other factors including time of the day, excercise just taken and so on.

when dieting protein should be increased

    Thanx for your post bro!

    But...
Wouldn't you need to INCREASE protein when BUILDING, not when DIETING?
So what you mean is, once you go off the diet and it's time to build muscle, you have to cut back your protein????
That doesn't make sense to me.
I've been gradually cutting back my calories to avoid muscle tissure loss, keeping a respectable amount of protein consumption (150-200g p/day) and dropping my carbs to about the same.

Anywayz, it's a debatable issue no matter where you turn.

    Peace.

    I follow a quite easy approach to this really;

    1/3
    1/3
    1/3

this macro nutrient profile will probably make you feel quite good.
Although in reality I probably get 40% energy from carbs, sometimes more,
but I think optimally one shouldn't get more than 50% energy from carbs at the highest. This does however change a little when using insulin , but even then I'm not that afraid of fat anymore.

As for protein requirement, if 1/3 of your energy comes from protein and you eat enough to grow, you probably get enough protein.
Again, can change a little when cutting.

I don't presume to have any answer that will suit everyone,
but this pretty much works for me.

Ofcourse, I also put in some Amino acids now and then, so that also changes things.
But right now I'm just regaining weight after the summer and I don't folllow any diet at all, I rarely do.
I don't really worry about protein, as I got a special kind of "protein hunger"

What concerns me is that I probably ingest too much carbs much of the time.
Still, my bodyfat ain't that high.

But when it comes to get really shredded then I say, each to their own.

as billy boy said above please read how protein works and why you need it, stop following the bro science and thinking protein is what makes you grow, it doesn't. protein needs to be high when bulking, it also needs to be high when cutting, when you learn how it works and how the body treats it you will KNOW why protein is important to bodybuilders not just taking it because that's what body builders take.

do the research. ps when cutting a slight excess of protein is not the end of the world, the body deals with protein a lot more sympathetic in a deficit than carbs.

    Protein is good u know.

Don't know why that reminds me that skeletons from the ice age (Stone Age humans) often have marks of being gnawed on.
As a professor I had used to say; "eating a human body pretty much ensures you the right nutrients to live."
