    New guy needs info

Hi! I'm 38 and just got the lab results of my first testosterone levels test. 263 total and 54 free. Doctor prescribed Testim gel so I started looking into it. I have twin 2 year olds and a 5 year old at home and after reading the warning about transferring the gel to women and children I'm not really cool with using it. I called and asked my doctor if I could get injectables and they said only "alternative medicine" doctors can give it and it's probably not covered by my insurance. I don't believe this. I'm in NJ. Is this true?

Low numbers for sure but post your BW with ranges if you can. It will allow us to better help you. With kids that young and the possibility of them crawling all over you at any given moment I would opt for injections also. Your doctor is obviously not up on TRT and just slaps gel on people to keep them happy. May be what the sales rep of the week is pushing in his office. Gel can/will work. Worked fine for me for a long time.

Your doctor telling you only altenative med docs can prescribe it is pure bullsh!t. Call your insurance provider and directly ask them that question. They'll answer you. I'd imagine they'd be happy to have you switch. It will save them a ton of money. Gel is expensive, test is relatively cheap.

Now, take some time and read all the stickies and educate yourself. In the Finding a TRT physician sticky is a link to finding the type of doc that you need. The more knowledge you gain the better prepared you'll be for whatever doc you see next.

Good luck and welcome to the forum. Stick around and update us on your progress on this thread please.

Report says 263 for total and 54 for free. The reference ranges listed are incorrect because they're for a female. Dr. said the lab messed up when they entered the info.

Turns out the MD in my area is a bodylogicmd affiliate. I've spent some time learning how their programs work and I have zero interest in pursuing that avenue.

I'll see what answers my insurance company can provide tomorrow.

The Androgel site has a FIND A DOCTOR tool. I would guess that any Dr. registered there is interested in providing TRT, and more likely to be regular doctor.

For insurance to cover injectables, the doctor usually has to obtain prior authorization by writing a letter of justification. Call you insurance and ask if your plan covers outpatient injectables - self administered if you want to do your own shots.

Look for a compounding pharmacy in your area. Use Google Earth and do a search on it and when you find them in your area call them and ask if they can refer you to a Physician who prescribes Testosterone injections for their patients.

This method has served many well here.

You could also find a Anti Aging Doctor somewhere else like Florida where you only need to see them physically one time a year and they will put you on a complete TRT protocol as well. Many men do that and find the once a year trip is worth every penny.

    Options for you...

I live in NJ too. My endo orginally prescribed androgel . I have young ones at home too and didnt like the idea of applying gel on my body and having to worry about contact with my wife or kids.

I then asked my doc (GP not my endo) to prescribe t-cyp 200mg/ml 10 ml vial. He did and I filled it at Walgreens. Its not covered by my insurance but the expensive androgel is. Go figure.

Test is cheap anyway. $80 a vial which will last you close to 5 months at 100mg a week.
