Bloodwork back........Low free test again
I'm 62 years old, 5"11", 175 lbs, 13 or 14% body fat and I lift wts and do cardio regularly. I had a complete blood test in August and everything was fine except that I had very low free test. I changed my diet and ate more beef as I very rarely ate red meat. I also added a few supplements that were supposed to increase T levels.
I just got the results of my most recent blood work which I had done to address the low test issue.
These are the results: Note....The free and total test is about the same as the August results.
DHEA-Sulfate 308...............Reference range 80-560
Estradiol 16.8.....................Reference range 0.0-39.8
Testosterone 472...............Reference range 241-827
Free Testosterone 9.41.......Refgerence range 8.69-54.69
From reading this board I know that free test is important for many reasons. I'd like any suggestions on getting my free test up without going on HRT? Does anyone have any insight on why it would be so low. I lead a healthy lifestyle, I eat right and I don't drink more than an occasional beer. Thanks.

Look into some Vitamin D for starters; possibly a prescription of Drisdol from the doctor if you can get it, 50,000iu/wk. If not, look at 5,000iu per day OTC. Also could look at some Stinging Nettle Root. Read up on it though, as it can also effect other variables such as DHT.
What you're essentially trying to do is to lower your SHBG count. Read up on that as well and you will see that it will be (and albumin) the factor with tying up your testosterone .
It would be good to run other labs to get a truer picture of what's going on in your body. The thyroid can sometimes play a role in this as well, e.g., hyperthyroidism will sometimes lead to high SHBG. Again, run all the panels you can get (refer to Kelkel's sticky, Finding an HRT Physician) in order to really assess your situation. Banking a protein shake that your Vitamin D level is way down there ...

Part of my stack as I tried to naturally raise my free test was to supplement Vitamin D and I took Vitamin D-3 5000 iu. These are the other Supps I took for the past 2 months to try to address the low free test problem. Tribulus, Saw Palmetto, Dhea, Horney Goat Weed, Vitamin b, Tonkat Ali, Daa, a multi, zinc, Fish Oil, Glutamine, Bcaa's and Arginine.
I'll look at the Stinging Needle I'm new and not familiar with the acronyms. What's SHBG and DHT? Thanks for the imput.Last edited by jj341; 12-07-2012 at 06:13 AM.

if ur going through your doc to get it then yes..if ur GP knows anything about maintaining healthy T-levels then he or she should have no problem putting you on it for at least 5 or 6 week run to see if itll give ur system a boost..personally i had to go to a hormone specialist b.c my GP does not have the slightest clue how to handle low test levels. At 18yrs old my total T was in the 200s and they gave me one shot a month of 300mg test enanthate and never once checked my E2 levels or anything then took me off injections about 3 or 4 months later without giving me anything to restart my system so be careful with a GP
