Acetic acid is not necessary, sodium chloride has a pH buffer in it, which is why people use acetic, the high pH buffer, acetic does keep IGF viable for extended periods, beyond four weeks, but if you are conducting research for over period with a milligram of IGF, you should not be using IGF in your research project anyway.
In other words sodium chloride is just as good as acetic for periods of less than four weeks per milligram
