    to tell the truth all i use is a set up from wal mart. works great for me. does incline decline bench military press has an add on pad for preacher curls and an add on for lat pull downs which can be used also for tricep pull downs with either a rope or traingle bar or etc. donno how much it costs from walmart i got it off a freind for 60 bucks half way put together. also bought 2 sets of dumbells with i donno how much weight, as much as i need, haha. after using it for a while the only thing i have found i cant do with it is seated rows for my back, but there are always ways to compensate. id really rather be at a gym but there is actually only 1 gym around here and its crazy expensive and always jamm packed with people.

    see my gym is not that bad price wise but its way to packed now and i would rather own my own set to use around the clock anytime i wanted to .i will say i have been placing to do my workouts like stores just so i can make a choice on a product the precor machines are the best money can but im sure of that but i dont have three to six grand but if i did i would spend it all on a precor so the next best machine would be the bowflex extreme but for cost wise the weider platinum would be the way to go for almost half the price .

    I hate the gym BS.

    I went to the Target center to workout on a bus. trip, capacity of the gym is over 3000. It reminded me of why I hate it so much:

    1) Don't care to see the male bodies in the locker room or stench.
    2) Don't care to use public showers
    3) Hate waiting for a pair of DB's I need cause some vain idiot is doing curls with a bar in front of them with a 10 second rep count (staring at himself the whole time).
    4) Hated the short benches for DB presses
    5) People asking you questions
    6) People looking to socialize
    7) People sitting on the equipment you need
    8) No treadmills available.

    You get the idea.

    I workout at home, the main reasons being
    1) I live 30 miles from the nearest gym.
    2) Guys always offering to help me out or hitting on me. (I go to the gym to workout, not date)

    Anyways, my home gym is all I need. I have 2 high cables, 2 low cables and a smith. I have a bench that I can use for Incline, decline and flat, dumbbells, barbells (smith and free) ez-curl bar, and the attachment for a t-bar row. The gym also has bars across the top for chinpus and there is a leg curl/leg extension attachment on the bench. The smith allows me to do bench without a spotter but I can still do freeweight if I have someone around. The only thing that I wish I had but don't is a 45 degree sled. I would love to have one of those for hack squats and 45 degree leg press, but they take up too much room and I just dont' have anywhere to put it.

    majority of the people are there to look at themselves....but the mirrors also provide you with the assurance that your form is proper....so...don't generalize

    Not generalizing. Sorry. You don't have to stand so close to the mirror as to block the dumbbells from other people. That's ok, got 3000lbs of dumbells in the basement.

    If you're into freeweights, then you can build a very effective gym.

    A quality 7' olympic bar is the same on your back/in your hands as it would be anywhere else. Thats number 1.

    A high-weight capacity power rack with chinning bar is the foundation with it, you can do a majority. A GOOD adjustable bench will slide in it.

    I can't see going with out a high pulley machine however, some will hook up to your power rack, others are stand alone units...can be pricey.

    Compiling a GOOD dumbell system can be a problem too without $$$'s.

    A good leg curl/extension aswell as a calf machine, are stand alone units you'll probably need too. The stuff at newyorkbarbells or a similar company, might be worth investigating.

    I prefer both, meaning gym and home gym. It's nice sometimes to get a couple of friends together and do a real hardcore workout for a particular muscle group at the home gym, with loud offensive music, screaming dropping weights etc. The kind of stuff not allowed in most of our -"fitness centers".

    I went to a place called,, play it again sports. Dumbelles were .39 cents per lb.

    If you by pairs of 5lb - 120lb at 5lb increments you are looking at 3000lbs

    3000
    * .39
    ====
    $1170

    I did it in phases, made 3 seperate trips when I had the cash to pick up more. BEst thing I ever did for my home gym. Will use them forever.

    Yes, I've seen those. And they will last forever, can't see breaking them.

    The ballbering units with that affix with the allen style bolts (the kind at most gyms), are my favorite however,EXPENSIVE just personal preference. The solid bell's don't work for me, something about the lack of rotation? maybee thats just because I learned on the other style of bells?and the biggest problem for me always has been that I havent seen them over 120 lbs! Witch for me would exclude back and chest. Traps too but I only use the bar for those now.

    That thing has been amazing. I am trying to remember where i ordered it from but can't. It is a cheap model but has run wit no maintenance for over 6 years perfectly. They probably don't make that specific model but it is the Proform brand. I got the one with the widest track at the time, it does 1-10 mph and eleveates to 10 degrees.

    Come to think of it, I ordered from their website. To compare current models look at the 700 series for something like what I have. Spent maybe $750-$799.

    Thx - I am in a townhouse, when I get something bigger with some more room, a hack squat and stationary bike are going in. Might also order some pro-style db's to get the 125's and 130's.

    It is nice if you do it slow and steady, just budget for it all.

    I mostly do olympic lifting at home, I actually like going to the gym, then tanning right after. But some days it is great to go in the basement and scream like a mad man and push some heavy weights
