    Hiatial Hernia

    Hey guys,

Well i'm in my 5th week of my bulking cycle and i am really into it as im seeing nice results. The thing is my doc found a small hiatial hernia. this is when the upper part of the stomach bulges into the diaphram. What do you guys think? shall i continue weight training? Is it something serious?

I really do not wanna quit now but i do not want to f*** myself up either.

    Please help.

Kind of a tough call. I would assume your hiatal hernia was probably the result of weight training. Most hernias of this type don't really cause you any symptoms. I would guess that you didn't even know you had it until the MD told you. If it gets worse you will start to have heartburn and reflux especially after eating meals. Generally people take antacids or Pepcid and such and get relief.

From a lifting perspective it's a 50/50 thing. You may continue to lift and have no problems whatsoever or you may go in tomorrow and do legs and make it so bad it requires surgery. The bottom line on this type of hernia, and this is strictly my opinion: keep training and closely monitor for an increase in symptoms. Some people go years with hiatals they didn't know existed with no problems. The only variable is the juice. I do not know if it will make you more prevalent to an exacerbated condition.

For some general info so you can make an informed decision try:

Well I was just checking things out on this board looking for advice on how to regain my size after my hernia operation when I stumbled on this. My hernia was Inguinal which is in the lower right part of your abdomen....I've had mine actually for 2 years! I didn't know what it was until late last year. It was still very small at the time of surgery and only became uncomfortable about a month or so before. My surgeon told me in December to keep lifting as I normally do (which is very heavy...deadlift 350). She said unless it's uncomfortable I don't need to change things. She also said they are absolutely a genetic thing. I was on a bulking cycle as well when i found out and wanted to finish it....as well, the recovery limits what u can lift for a while and being in the northeast....i wouldn't even be able to shovel snow for a while. So the doc said i could wait, my situation wasn't so severe it had to be done sooner. I was happy at the time that I could finish my bulking cycle; however, it made little difference. Because I had the surgery, I can't lift for a few weeks, and that's that. Four weeks off from lifting and what do you think happens? You're not going to keep it all. At least I didn't. My advice is just get it done sooner so you can get started on recovery sooner. Don't do too much to make it worse during recovery. And if anyone here has any post-hernia surgery advice on how best to regain ize/strength.... training/diet/supplements/best AS recommendations....they are MUCH appreciated. Good luck bud.

If it really is a hiatal hernia it is not a big deal at all. Many people get those for all kinds of reasons. I got them about 4 times a week because i ate food at like 10pm and then would go to bed. It is not serious but it does feel uncomfortable. Take both your hands and with your fingers overlapping place them just below your last rib on your left side and take a deep breath and traction your deep tissue down toward your feet. Many times this helps coax them apart........usually takes me 3 or 4 to get it each time. When they separate they may make a sound wierd like suction click, it is normal.
