Thread: Painful popping in shoulder

    Painful popping in shoulder

My shoulders pop in certain positions when I lower them. This is not a normal joint pop where gas is released, its painful. I'll do lateral raises, on the way up there is no pain, on the way down there is one (never more) painful pop. If I hold dumbells while moving the pain is worse. The pop occurs between the shoulder and collarbone. I have normal strength and range of motion in my shoulder. I never had any injury to my shoulder, I think the pain just came on gradually. This pain has been bothering me for about 2 months.

I went to the doctor when the pain really started to bother me. 2 women came in and told me there is nothing wrong with my shoulder. I told them it was constantly bothering me with popping, they got a man to check it out. I raised my shoulder for him and he could hear the pop. He told me its just inflammation and I need to take 2400 mgs of ibuprofen every day. I did that for about 2 weeks, it helped a little but not much. I decided to quit that because of all the stomach/heart risks.

I went to my chiropractor for an adjustment and told him about the pain. He told me that it was not a normal joint pop, instead the muscle is rolling over and hitting the bone. He did some shoulder adjustment which I could feel, but it didn't really seem to help.

I found this article about tendon pain
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drryan13.htm Tendonitis and tendonosis were never even mentioned by any of the doctors I had seen. I tried exercising like this for 2 days but I think it aggravated the problem more. My problem seems more like tendonitis than tendonosis, but maybe its something completely different.

I started using liniment yesterday which seems to help. I think I am just gonna go back to staying off of it like I was before I read that article. I'm 18 btw.

I realize it is hard to diagnose over the internet.

I think I might have a torn labrum. The symptoms of a torn labrum are,
    # An aching sensation in the shoulder joint
    # Catching of the shoulder with movement
    # Pain with specific activities

I have all 3 of these.

go to an ortho specialist, you need an mri to see if it is your labrum

Went to see another doctor today. He thinks it is burstitis and not a torn labrum. He told me that I may want to get an ortho to look at it and xray it. I am thinking about just doing ART and not going to the orthopedist. I have read a lot of good things about ART on these forums. Problem is the nearest ART place is 74 miles away, but it sounds like it would definately be worth the trip. I also have some neck and back problems that need fixed (chiro adj. and massage are not working well).

Hope the ART stuff helps, it sounds like it is a miracle worker.

I went to an ART doctor today. He worked on my shoulders, neck, back, head. He also worked on my glutes, which I had no idea were causing problems. Even more surprisingly my glutes had the most tension, when he worked them they hurt like hell.

The shoulder thing he said is just an instability caused by some muscles in the shoulders being stronger than others. It is not a worn out joint tendon/ligament. The doctor I saw seemed like he knew a lot more than any other doctor I have ever seen.
I am very sore in the glutes now.

It was hard as hell to get to the place so I don't know if I am going to be able to go back. It sounds like the shoulder thing is not going to resolve through art, I just need to strengthen it. I am probably going to try to get these other problems resolved before I do that though.

I have also been taking glucosamine, chrondroitin, msm which is helping.

Well I have been having some minor low back problems and that can be related to the glutes.
