lower back
I "popped" my lower back doing very heavy deadlifts and now it's very stiff on my lower right back. I actually heard it "pop" when I did my lift and my whole right leg went numb and started to tingle. I have not been able to lift now for almost a week. X-rays were negative. My doc said I strained my ligament. Anyone else have this injury? how long w/o lifting? I am very upset about it, I am in the peak of my cycle too!!!

Xrays only show bone, no soft tissue. Could be muscle, tendon, ligament, or even disc. I agree, see a Chiro, if improvement isn't seen 2-3 weeks, MRI might be warranted.

That sucks. I hurt mine doing squats a year ago. It still isnt straight. I did go to a chiropractor...and it helped alot. Numbness in leg means pressure being applied to a nerve...not comfortable! I had it. Doc took X-rays said there was no bone damage with mine either...bastard tried to give me some 600mg ibuprofen....Def see a Chiro. Ice your back.

Yeah, I am getting depressed now, I can't work out and I am watching my gains disappear already. It's been 8 days and I feel better but not going to risk it by going to the gym yet although I do think it everyday. I get a lot of tingling in the back of my right leg. I will just wait till Monday and then I am going to the gym to see what I can do. For me, I get real depressed when I can't work out, it messes with my head and the pain medicine doesn't help. Thanks for the advice guys.

i got a similar injury rushing trhough deadlifts..... the doc said it was a torn lumbar.... i took off for a week with some mucle relaxers for spasms and its been fine since ... that happened about a month ago...when you do get back to the gym try wearing your weight belt extra tight for more support.....

An MRI is your best bet. Any sciatica down your leg? Could be a bulged disk. I was deadlifting last may and the same thing happened. My MRI said I had a bulged disk. I heard a loud audible pop. It felt like someone hit me in the ass with a 2X4. I actually just started back doing deads with real light weights.

Thanks for the responce. I am actually getting pain in the back of my leg and it's severe at times, the pain in the back is very minor but in the back of my thigh, all the way from my butt to the back of my knee, OUCH! it's like a very long and strong electrical shocking pain and it will tingle too. At times I just can't move it and I am starting to limb because of it. I am calling the doctor now to get a referral to my orthopedic, can't take it anymore. I am scared you may be right about the disc. What was the verdict in your case? I mean did you get surgery? rehab? or did it just get better with time?
Thanks

If it is a disc find a doc who does true decompression, not tractioning. Whole series takes about 6 weeks (20 or so treatments). Amazing results, completely non-invasive.

thanks for the reply. I just went to my doctor and he is referring me to physical therapy for decrompression. I have my fingers crossed because the pain is too much. I can't work out at all, I have trouble standing and walking now. I'll post my PT results after I start.

Remember, please make sure it is true decompression. Some will call tractioning decompression but they are not the same. No proof of creating a vacuum effect in the disc thus allowing the healing to take place. Tractioning is on a linear plane and with the low back a lordotic curve is present necessitating gradual loading and unloading in line with the disc creating a negative pressure. This cancels out any muscle guarding and potential spasm of the paraspinal muscles.

Decompression works nice, I wish it worked for me but I had physical damage (herniated L5) If you get an inversion table do NOT try doing sit ups hanging up side down when back is hurting and you have not warmed up. Surgery 10 days later.
If you have sharp pain starting in your glutes either on the left or right side traveling down your leg and feels like someone has a needle jammed in your butt cheek it is a sciatic nerve. I have had this SEVERAL times and sometimes the foot or whole leg goes numb. If this happens the best fix I have ever found is get a prescription for Prednisone. I dont like the stuff, causes water gain but it work better than anything I have tried over the last 20 years and I know many people it has helped.
Good luck with the recovery.

kfrost....check out an inversion table....strap your ankles in and it rotates you 180% ...hang around until you are uncomfortable....the gravity of your upper body will space vertebraes out again....MRI....it'll show the disc....hope you get a bead on it....
lovbyts is right...just hang...looseLast edited by whiteowl; 05-09-2008 at 08:53 PM.

just an update, the tractioning is working and I do it twice a week. The load is now up to 75lbs for 20min but it does something like 5mins cycles. Again it helps but it's a slow process. We started somewhere around 50lbs and over about 3 weeks moved up to 75lbs The last time at 75lbs I felt the most relief however the next day my entire spine was really sore. I still have numbness and pain just not as bad. I tried working out again lightly but my nerve acted up the next day, really frustrating because I am addicted to lifting and I just can't stand missing this much lifting.
I am STILL waiting for an appointment with my rheumotolgist to get cortisone shots. I've heard that helps a lot. I think I will ask my doc about the prednisone. My pain now gets bad enough where I have to take a narcotic pain killer and I do not want to go down that road, I take less then half of what he prescribed but prefer to take none. I am healing just very slowly, to slow for me.
Thanks for all the advise, it actually helps hearing from others that went through it.

the cortisone injections now are a bit different than what i got 35 yrs ago....the cartridge has three stages....a local (like novicane) to numb the area, then dye (so the Dr can see the inflamed nerve on the TV monitor) and the cortisone (which shrinks the inflamed nerve)....the dr will do it in stages...cause trust me, if he hits the cortisone before the local kicks in, the burn will make you jump and no one needs that....then it can be between 6 hours and 3 days before the relief is truly felt....good luck from someone who has had at least 40 of 'em.
ps you may just need to lay off the cheese burgers
