    Flat bench shoulder pain

My right shoulder hurts when I flat bench. That is the only time it bothers me. I've been lifting heavy for the last 3 or 4 months and it started about 3 weeks ago. Anyone have any ideas what it is

I had the same problem just last year and ended up messing my shoulder up pretty bad. You almost have to go to the doc and get checked cause there's so many muscles, ligaments and tendons in that area it's almost impossible to tell. Rotator seems to be the common answer i've gotten though.
I suggest you switch up to something else before you hurt something. Dumbells are better anyway imo.

yeah bro might have to get that checked by a professional for a definitive answer. Where is the pain in the shoulder? When you bb bench where are your elbows? Such as 90 angle from body?45 degree angle from body? If bb bench hurts don't do them the problem will probably just compound itself, try db or hammer strength machines.

I had this happen a few times in my recent cycle but I think it may just be that my shoulders werent handling the weight very well. I got my bench up to 370 so I figure I need to build up my shoulders more before going any higher on the flat bench.

There are numerous amounts of people that do Flat bp WRONG! Most of these people feel more work in the anterior deltoid. I suggest you move to d-bell and turn your wrist a bit to take the shoulder out of the motion.

Watch this as it will show you how to hold the d-bells and help with your shoulder issues

If it hurts dont do it. I have had multi trainers watch me and all say i have good form. I tried different elbow angles/grips/positions nothing works. I feel a great pump on front delts but pain in only the left shoulder. I have given up. I can incline BB bench but not flat.

i agree with dsm4life...for alot of ppl flat bench is a problem...i use machines and use a little less weight on the bench...but i guess the triceps and delts take alot of the weight...

I used to have the same problem. My question is do you play a sport? The reason that I ask is because I used to get the bench shoulder because I would play hockey on Friday night and go to do chest on saturday. I think this was because in hockey a lot of your movements with the stick use your shoulders so I would get sore when I would go to bench. I still get it sometimes but mostly I got used to it. But if its really a problem, then I wouldnt do it anymore. There are other alternatives.

yeah i would give db a try for awhile and do not pull elbows back or as you say flare out, chest out, shoulders down and keep elbows angled, when you have flared out or at 90 degree there is much more stress on shoulders and you are actually working chest less. goodluck.

there arn't many b/bers who bench heavy and haven't had some form of shoulder issue in their lives. Ive been through months of torment, 1st from the right and now just starting to come out of the worst of it on the left. When i saw a physio she explained a few things; when we build up strength in our chest the rate at which our muscles get strong is a lot faster than our tendons. The shoulder joint has many tendons that become stressed esp the rotator cuff, which can be prone to tearing, a slight tear is repairable with pysio, normally low weight high rep training, a full on tear on the other hand would req surgery. Another thing that can happen in the shoulder muscle is smaller muscle groups can become pinched and aggravated by larger ones. There is one muscle in particullar; i can't remember the name of it but it is used on the initial raising of the arm from the side before the delts take over. This is the one i had trouble with anf took 6months to fully heal. The best advice i can give is drop the weights down for a while and switch up the exercises that really aggravate the injury. The more you try to train through it the worse it will get

    Flat Bench Pain

Until proven otherwise, shoulder pain isolated to flat bench activities is posterior labral pathology. Sometimes it can also invlolve some of the superior labrum (you may have heard of SLAP lesions, which also have to do with the biceps tendon). Very, very common in linemen.... think of the position of their arms. always pushing. The humeral head starts sliding off the back of the glenoid and it becomes very painful. You need to go see an orthopedist and have them examine you. If they feel subluxation, then you have one of two options.... take some NSAIDs and begin PT if it just started, and give it some time to go away. If it's been getting worse, or going on for more than a couple months, you need an MRI arthrogram of your shoulder. Good luck.
