I hurt my back/neck in a car accident (rear ended) and I was wondering if using steroids would reduce the pain in the area or is it strictly for gaining strength?

The steroids you are thinking of are not of the anabolic/androgenic nature. They will reduce the swelling but will make you bigger or stronger.
prendisone is given sometimes
cortizone injections sometimes
stuff like that to knock out the inflamation
anabolic steroids should not be taken for back pain
methylprednisolone, naproxen, and tramadol are what i am on right now, and they are doing a pretty good job. just go to your doc and tell him what you need. don't beat around the bush, because those f#ckers are lazy.
Hydrocone for pain
Skelaxin for muscle spasms
Motrin or celebrex for inflamation.
Thats my regiment, I try not to take the Hydro if I dont have to. 2 of those and a beer and you will be on your ass.
I'd recommend you look into giving amitriptyline a shot. It was originally designed as an anti-depressant in the 70's and I guess back then it was pretty good. It's part of the tricyclic family of anti-depressants which are usually considered less refined as anti-depression medication, with less effectiveness and more side effects, compared to the new stuff like prozac. As a result most of the people I know who use/used it use it as a sleeping pill, not for depression. One thing that a lot of people don't know is that it can also be a great neck pain reliever for whiplash type injuries. I'd run it by your doctor and see what he says about it.
