Thread: Broken Hand?

    Broken Hand?

Ok, so today I fractured my hand. My pinky knuckle on my right hand to be exact. My question is how long should I expect to not be able to lift for, or if it would even be neccesary to take a break if I can take the pain. I think it is basically a boxers fracture and I figured somebody on the board may have had a similar injury before. BTW it's very hard to type with just one hand.

I don't think that will be a major setback to training. what did the doc say? I've never broken a pinky knuckle, but perhaps you can adjust your grip so as to still do most lifts. keep us posted

What exactly are you training for?
What kinda training are you talking about?
If you continue training that hand you'll: make it worse, prolong healin, or maybe you get lucky (but wouldn't count on it).
Films are the only way for sure to tell if broken.
You should get this kind of advice from your Dr.

It will be swollen and sore but after a couple weeks you can probably work out with some pain but manageable

do you know a lot of people that train their hands? I could easily bench without even having pinkies. obviously he shouldn't be using or aggravating it, but if a broken pinky knuckle would put you out of training at all then we have different training ethics.

Well see, the problem is that right now, trying to grip anything with my right hand is painful. Making a fist, and fully straightening the fingers is difficult, so for now at least my hand is stuck in a claw like position. I've had this injury several times before, but never as severe. I guess for now ill be using wrist straps for any exercise that requires grip strength. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated as to any progress or whatever difficulties I have in the gym because I'm sure some of them will be worth a laugh or two. lol.

This is the problem with seeking med advise on a forumn. If it is a Boxer/brawler Fracture it involves the 5th metacarpel so not the knuckle. It's the hand.

Not trying to be an ass, afterall I'm a newb here. You've got a lot of expereince and knowledge that I'm looking for but your off the mark here.

You may be limping this on by not giving it adequate time to heal and reinjurying it. This can become a problem large than it is now.

X2 get some films shot. Your not going to like what the Dr says as you sound like the kinda guy that would push through cause you'd rather be training. Afterall "no pain no ain," but this is a different type of pain.

you may notice I asked what the doc said in my initial post so I could advise from there, as well as clarifying in my signature in every post "For medical advice seek a qualified professional". I certainly don't condone people taking unnecessary medical risks, but come on...

I noticed just the work through it part is the most likely thing to stick in the mind of someone that doesn't want to stop. I see that alot and have done it myself to the point injuries became a surgical repair.

Really not trying to come off as a know it all, this is just my job and i work with hard headed guys who will push through too much.

makes sense, sorry if I came across the wrong way. I'm injured currently and it will be months before I can lift even a few pounds with my left arm, I don't mean to advocate training no matter what, I just don't think this will have him sidelined for long and wanted to lift his spirits, but ultimately the docs know way more than I do.

I'm nursing an injury that will cost me 6 months before I can power clean, thrusters, or any jumping again. With luck will be able to run too.

You didn't come off wrong, I'm new and don't want to be "that guy."

Well I do beleive that it is a boxer's fracture because my entire hand on one side is swollen and in pain. I am going to see a doctor, the holdup being that my insurance just lapsed 2 weeks ago so I will have to pay out of pocket. It does look like I won't be in the gym for at least 3 or 4 weeks, but I will know for sure after I see a doctor,(hopefully today or tommorow). Thanks for all the advice!

A broken hand costs an average of $21,700 to treat out of pocket at a hospital, according to Vimo, a health care cost-comparison Web site.

I drink at least a half gallon a day anyway so I might bump it up to a gallon. I actually got jumped. One guy tried to choke me from behind and i felt his finger in my mouth so I bit down hard. I tasted blood so then I just started ripping my head from left to right and he pushed me away. I got a couple hits on the other guy and then missed one and hit the door full force. This was in front of my friend's garage just when I was leaving. My friend and his brother came out and they ran off. I only knew one of the guys and I don't even know why they wanted to jump me. BTW how long was it before you could lift again. I've been out like a week and it sucks.

I think that estimate is because a lot of people have to have surgery. It probably won't be neccesary in this case.
