I had surgery for a torn labrum 2 weeks ago. 2 anchors. They also shaved a bone spur and took out some bursitis. I was in PT 3 days after and the therapist says my range of motion at this point is way ahead of schedule. I wasn't on anything when I got hurt, but I was doing whatever I was able to in the gym right up to the week of the surgery. The therapist has me doing some range of motion stuff at home as well so hopefully I maintain this pace and I'm praying I don't screw something up. I'll be in the sling at least another 2 weeks the dr. says.. The therapist stated I will be very close to 100% and will be able to lift again.. key thing is he didn't say how long it would take. I hear it's around 4-6 months.
I started PT 24 hrs after surgery 4-17-2012. My doctor is aggressive and I already have pretty much full range of motion. It's a little sore and I have to move slow but no real pain, only sore.
Shaved a lot of bone, removed bone spurs, lots of tears in the labrum, arthritis and more. I start band work this week, and week 2 light weights. My doctor is the main Ortho for our pro football and baseball team.
Do you guys have any popping in the shoulders after surgery?
I had a lot before surgery. I still have a little depending on how I move it but it's only been 6 days and I'm doing a lot of stretching.
I didn't have much popping.. just toward the very end right before my surgery. I also injured it relatively recently so I wasn't living with it for very long. Yea, same here. not pain, but sore. I have good range of motion.. I just need to warm up a bit to stretch out. Most of my issues are first thing in the morning when I'm stiff from sleeping. The sling at this point is more of an annoyance, but the dr.s and PT are adamant about 4 weeks.
lovbyts -- that's great news that you're that far along so fast. I have an aggressive Dr. as well who is affiliated with Madison Square Garden and the US Open Tennis so he deals with athletes as well. Tell you the truth.. i've been in PT for 2 weeks and all they've done so far is electric stim (which I had the guy put up way too high, then ultrasound, then he'll stretch my arm with my elbow on the table and he'll pull my wrist out toward him for about 5 to 10 minutes and then ice. I do way more at home.. I'm doing 100 reps a day of the same stretches with a broom stick with my right arm being the engine and another 100 reps a day with the broomstick, laying flat on my back and bringing my arms straight out over my head with the back of my hands eventually touching the floor. Just curious what they allowed you to do at home.
Hmmm mine wont start electric stim for a couple of weeks. He wants to work mainly on range of motion, stretching and some manual massage for the first 2 weeks then light weights. My doctor was specific on what he wanted the PT to do, maybe your doctor needs to be specific also or find another PT, sounds like they are taking the easy way out.
I do the same laying on the floor on my back arm at my side straight up over to my head on the floor several reps 5x a day. Also on my back arm palm up at my side sliding it along the ground all the way up to my head and beyond.
Standing at the wall slide my hand from my side up the wall over my head then turn my body and arm 90 deg so my side is against the wall and lay as flat to the wall as possible at least 5x in a row 5x a day. Bring the arm up to a 90 deg angle with my hand pointed up, elbow out turn my head the opposite way pushing my chest/body flat into the wall stretching. Arm behind my back using my good arm holding my wrist of the bad arm lifting it as high as I can 5x in a row 5x a day or more. Also laying on my back with my elbow out 90 deg from my side I put my arm/hand towards my head to my feet keeping my arm/elbow flat on the ground, that one hurts a little. All this started 1st day after surgery.
I will start band work this week, tomorrow. I'm also doing broom stick work at home and just general stretching. Worse thing you can do is nothing or keeping it immobile. I have not used my sling since day 3.
