    Tattoos to cover scars?

Anyone had any experience with this? Im contemplating getting a tat to cover some old acne scars. Thanks for any insight

What types of scars (atrophic/hypertrophic)? Is there any hyperpigmentation? How old are the scars? How large an area? Are you thinking black and gray or colored ink?

    PecBounce, things to consider:

Covering acne scars is a difficult and tedious process. If the scar is raised there will be an indistinct area in the tattoo that will also be raised.

Covering scars is time consuming. Depending on the skin or scar texture, two or more passes with the needle may be needed for the ink to take.

Covering acne scars is more painful because scar tissue is very sensitive since nerve endings are closer to the "new skin".

Black is generally best; color will bleed or fade from the skin. There is always a possibility that black may blot or run beneath the tissue, but if a very fine line is used this problem can be eliminated.

Its usually best to get a small tattoo within the area first to determine if the skin will accept the pigment.

The acne scar should be at least one year old before tattooing (the older the scar, the better). Destroyed tissue takes a long time to heal, so the older the scar, the better it will take the pigment.

    this

and you will find that most reputable artists wont go anywhere near a scar, if it dosnt turn out well then its their name to it, people dont take into account the scar when looking at it, they just see shitty work, and a decent artist values his rep more then any couple hundread dollar tattoo, I have had a couple designs refused already from top artist over here as he reckons it wont look right on part of body Im asking for, so he wont do it since its his name and rep attached to it

although then we have artists who will do anything once they get their $$$$ at the end of it, I know who I use and will continue to use.....

Thanks for the great responses guys. The scar is about 4x3 inches. Its not one distinct scar and isn't really raised...just sort of discolored a bit(lighter but not WHITE). I would prefer a darker(black) tat that is mostly filled in.

Probably doable but best to ask around. DB is right. Some artists won't touch it, not because they can't cover it, but because if it doesn't turn out well it's their rep on the line.

Ask around. Check out some studios and artists and see what they say.

    Hope it works out.

i had to have a tatt redone since the original artist fukked it up. too much scarring the first time, and the ink bled out. the second artist was a friend of my sons. she said the scar tissue makes it tough for the ink to get a foot hold, and therefore she couldn't guarantee it coming out the right way. she went for it and it came out fine.

btw... she had a tatt of Christopher Walken on her inner thigh (she had to drop her drawers to show me), and she's like 22.

wtf wouuld anyone want that putz's face on them????? weird

The guys are right. It all depends what artist you talk to. Anyone with any talent or experience will not touch them for a long time. I have 2 scars on the inside of my arms where my bicpes were re-attached. My right arm is prety bad because I tore it 100 percent and they had to dig pretty high. Plus when I was getting my stples out, the nurse lost one and was digging for it for like 15 minutes until the doctor looked over her shoulder and lost her shit( I was full of percoets so it didnt bother me.lol. Back to my point. I hae a sleeve on that arm. 95 percent of the work was done by a really well known and respected artist in Alberta. He wouldnt touch it. I have been to guys that say its no prob but they are all just walk in shops. My guy said he might try once its about 5 years old depending on what it looks like then. But he is so good that the way he shaded around it and did his thing, you could look at my forearm and the scar looks like it belongs in the tattoo. Just remember that is someone wants to do it and the scar tissue is not ready, you dont have a second chance at it and it will never look good.

Dude! I tore my calf three weeks ago. First time in my life I tore a muscle and it's only partial but I'm whining like a baby. I can NOT fvcking imagine a total tear and a bicep no less. I work in the medical field and have an extremely high tolerance for blood and trauma (I've had my hands inside someone's head trying to relieve intracranial pressure) but your story hits too close to home! I'm laying on the couch icing my leg reading your post and my guts are turning!!!!! Lol

The tat sounds bad ass by the way!

Yea, Wasnt the greatest year of my life. Right was tore 100 percent and left 80 percent. Day after it happened I was in the operating room for my right. They couldnt do both at once because I had to keep my arm at 90 degrees for 6 months after the operation and would be crazy both being like that. I wasnt allowed to lift more than a cup of coffee with the left during this 6 months. After 6 months I had the second operation while I was allowed to strech my right 10 degrees a month until I could go all the way.lol.. After it happened and I got the MRI's done, the first thing out of the Doctors mouth was " have you ever done Steriods?" I guess my tendons were pretty wore out and just let go. The even better part to this story is that we just had our first baby like a month before and I couldn't pick him up for the first year of his life. The only saving grace of this whole story is that I had 3 different Doctors all very interested in this because of my age at the time(34) and to tear both at once. Besides the 2 scars my biceps were put back into perfect form and you would not ever be able to tell the they were pulled back down from over my shoulders.lol... How are your guts now. lol

Cape, you are a hard core mofo! I gotta hand it to you, that was one heck of a year to get through. I'm sure it must of hit you just as heavily mentally. Glad to hear you pulled through.

The whole steroids weakening tendons issue is something I worry about too. I know a lot of gear can dry out tendons and ligaments and that's something I worry about. When my calf muscle tore, it was so low I was sure it was the tendon-muscle junction because if dry or weak tendons.

You may wnat to look into alternatives like dermabrasion or a TCA chemical peel.

I actually have had both and laser treatments. Really sucks to spend so much time in the gym but yet I feel insecure to take my shirt off due to the scarring.
