    looking at a hip replacement

mri of hip indicates severe degenerative arthritis and coupled with sharp pain resulting from torn labram, i'm looking at a hip replacement. i'm looking for any experience or ideas on how best to navigate the months ahead... should i live with the pain (any lateral motion/stress causes sharp pain), look at alternate treatments (i've tried hyaluronic acid into the joint and cortizone - no effect), or go for the replacement?

i understand there are a few options on replacements - the so-called full replacement (1 year off of squats) and so-called hip joint resurfacing.

my goals are to find the most effective path to eliminate the pain and maintain the program (in the shortest period of time).

Hey Bartman I can def help. I had the Bermingham Hip Resurfacing done 3 years ago. It kept me out of the gym for a year but things are much better now. It is a way better option than doing a traditional hip replacement. Things will never be as good as they were prior but so much better than living in pain all the time. There is a great website www.surfacehippy.info where you can get all the info you will need. Please let me know how I can help.

I still get frustrated because squatting is frustrating. I have issues with range of motion during squats and leg presses and my strength is far from where it was. That said, I can still squat and leg press and more importantly I can sleep at night. I lives with such major pain for so long it's great not dealing with the pain.

Yes, this site was pivotal for me when going thru everything. There were several people on there that helped me dramatically. The forum is worth it's weight in gold and more. A good majority of the people on there are athletes so they know what you're going thru and will help you thru the entire process. They had a great video on there that showed exactly how the resurfacing is done. I made a mistake of watching the entire surgery video on youtube which was crazy. They talk about "heavy blows of the mallot" and I actually work up 3 times during surgery from the hammering. haha

I will have to have my left hip done eventually but I'm hoping I have 10 years before that point but who knows. It was something that needed to be done and you'll be fine if you have a good surgeon.

My sister has had both hips replaced in the last 5 years and she is happy with the results.
