I used to love them, but they just never felt right after I had my surgery. Strangely enough lunges and deadlifts still feel okay though. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Yeah after my L3/L4 and L5/S1 surgery I just never felt right doing squats, only VERY light. I just do leg press now
Well...if it doesn't feel right----DON'T DO THEM.
Sometimes takes a few years to heal. Especially as you older.
Try doing your squat routines with lesser reps than the usually then increase more as you get to feel the right feeling again. Like all other surgeries, you gotta let it heal and adjust your body again.
