Rest, alternate ice and heat and NSAIDS. If after a week or so your lower back is still sore, look into getting an adjustment by a chiropractor. I too have on and off lower back issues. My biggest issue is my hips come out of place which causes lower back pain. A quick adjustment by my chiro works wonders. After 1 session my pain was reduced by more than half. After the 2nd session a week later I was pain free.

No heat, only ice for at least 3 days. 20 - 30 minutes on, 20 - 30 minutes off. Repeat at least 3x in a row and 3x a day.

Heat will feel good only a short time. It will cause more inflammation.

The ice will also help the sciatic nerve if you do it right. I have dealt with back issues a lot. Herniated L3/L4 1985, surgery finally in 2005. Ruptured L5/S1 in 2007 and surgery 2 weeks later. Ice is your best friend...

Have someone help you use proper form when doing dead lifts. Most injuries is due to form. Once you hurt it you are more likely to do it again so take care, dont push it.

Do as LB suggests and then stop the deadlifts or this may become a regular thing for you. I have had back surgery and wont deadlift cause I don't want another.
