i use extensions to work on my inner head. Do them with your toes pointed outward.
For sweep i do alot of close stance stuff. Or even feet together.

I only have the fact that it stimulates its more that way then straight forward when im doing them. Tighter contraction etc.(on mypersonal experience.) I dont know what else you want to hear.
And besides that i like them for warming up with. My knees cant take straight squats cold or even warmed up on a treadmill. I need to get a semi pump going. So i do straight toed to what feels like to me.. My overall quad. Then 2-3 sets heavy with toes pointed out and it seems to stimulate my inner head more then anything else i do.Last edited by Epic1; 10-31-2009 at 11:07 AM.

I also think pointing your toes out (or inward) on extensions places undue stress on the knee joint. (Knees should always be inline with the toes)On squats or presses pointing them out works fine as you are still able to keep the knee angle inline with the toe. But on extensions anything except toes straight forward is placing torque on the knee as you are stuck in a fixed plane of motion.
BTW, I have to make squats my 2nd movement as well but have found presses warm my knees up better than anything else.

I agree on the knee torquing. My feet tend to naturally want to point outward on extensions. I dont know in its becasue other parts of my legs are under developed or not. But it tends to do that and seems to isolate that area. Ill do pretty light weight on leg press for many reps to figure out where my feet need to be positioned to hit certain areas of my legs. which is what i was sharing as to what i have found doing so.

I think leg extensions are great if you do a few sets of 6 reps 6 negatives... having a partner helps so they can really tear you up on the negatives. after doing those last week i was so pumped and my legs really exploded.

Sorry, to me trying to build big legs doing extensions is the exact same as trying to build huge triceps by doing DB kickbacks. They may burn but I would not expect them to grow from it.

Correctomundo!!! Over time you may develop CHONDROMALACIA. Its actually very common but there is no need in helping it out! Hints why its best to keep toes forward when squating, leg ext.,leg press etc... Your patella tendon tracts your foot so everywhere the foot goes the patella wants to follow and intern ends up with the patella rubbing one side of the knee joint.
