    Old sailor here

I stumbled across this site while try to research androgel and thought I might as well join and see if I can get more assistance in achieving my goals. I am a 21 year Navy vet (retired in 2000) and am currently 50 years young. While in the Navy i was certified as a fitness instructor via the college of sports medicine and always seemed to end up as the Command Fitness Coordinator. While in the Navy it was easy to stay in shape (lifting and running the beach) but, since retiring in Wisconsin (cold winters) and older it has been a roller coaster ride. I have been back on track for close to 2 years now watching what I eat somewhat and working out 4-5 times a week.

Back in June of 2001 I had my annual physical with the VA and asked to have my testosterone levels checked during the blood work. It came back at 312. The VA said this is perfectly normal for someone 50 years old but, my research indicates in the 600's is more normal so I went to the civ docs. She looked at all my blood work and everything was perfect, vitamin D, Cholesterol, PSA, triglycerides etc etc... so she said she would start me on Androgel (1%). I was doing 4 pumps once a day and then my levels dropped so she increased to 4 pumps twice a day. Continued this for 2 months and did another blood test and levels were still in the 200's, so she tried the patch. I go for another blood test today to see if the patch is working. I hate the patch big and it falls off all the time, so I have an appoint for August 1st to see about getting on the shot.

Funny thing is I actually feel and look like the testosterone is working. I am not fat (to much body fat for me but not fat by most standards) and was already muscular before starting androgel. Now after a year I am a bit bigger and leaner and overall feel pretty good. I still crash in the afternoon about 1/2 the days but an office job working at a PC 8 hours a day I think it's my old eyes that get tired!

My goal is to get down to about 12% BF and build just a little bit more muscle. I have read about the ups and downs of shots and most recommend doing weekly shots vise every 2 weeks. Any other suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Welcome to the board mate!
Careful how you use the word "old" as some of us other 50yr youngsters have been trying to spin it the other way!
If you like the gel, you will love the weekly injections. I've been doing this for three years (almost) and it is a step up in convenience and blood serum level stability.
We have two subforums for you to review, the HRT section and the over 40 section
    cheers!~

I don't know about at ease!! 21 years of steel decks, running in boots, and running airfields and beaches, etc... has caused some problems with arthritis in joints. Mostly I have to be careful with my upper back. I crashed my motorcycle on the race track in 2006 and crushed my C6. My C6 and C5 are fused but I have a permanently herniated C7 that causes me problems at times. I have to pay attention to pain...is it good pain or bad pain. When the C7 nerve flares up I am done lifting.
