Minnesota sends first Muslim to Congress

Minnesota sends first Muslim to Congress
    08 Nov 2006
    Source: Reuters

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Voters elected a black Democrat as the first Muslim in Congress on Tuesday after a race in which he advocated quick U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and made little mention of his faith.

Keith Ellison, a 43-year-old lawyer and state representative, defeated two rivals, television networks said, to succeed retiring Democrat Martin Sabo in a seat that has been held by Democrats since 1963.

Ellison, who converted to Islam as a 19-year-old college student in his native Detroit, won with the help of Muslims among a coalition of liberal, anti-war voters.

He advocates an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq along with strongly liberal views. While Ellison did not often speak of his faith during the campaign, awareness of his candidacy drew interest from Muslims well beyond the district centered in Minneapolis.

A significant community of Somali immigrants in Minneapolis cast their first votes for him in the crowded September primary. Ellison also was the surprise choice of party regulars.

While Muslim-Americans make up less than 3 percent of the U.S. population and have largely been a non-factor in terms of political power, get-out-the-vote efforts in several Muslim communities could indicate they may become an emerging force.

Roughly 2 million Muslims are registered U.S. voters, and their ranks increased by tens of thousands in the weeks prior to Tuesday's mid-term elections, Muslim groups have said.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks by Islamic militants, Muslim-Americans have become sensitized to what many feel is an erosion of their civil rights. U.S. foreign policy that targets Muslim countries also has generated a sense of urgency, experts said.

"(Americans) treat us differently after Sept. 11. My own father was attacked," said Ellison supporter Khadra Darsame, a 1995 immigrant from Somalia. "Ellison said everybody matters equally and he told us what he would do ... he will do the right thing."

Born into a Roman Catholic family in Detroit, Ellison said his values were shaped by both faiths, along with his grandfather's civil rights work in the Deep South.

Opponents focused on Ellison's sloppy handling of his taxes and a slew of unpaid parking tickets, along with his one-time affiliation with the Nation of Islam, whose leader, Louis Farrakhan, has been criticized for making anti-Semitic remarks. Ellison subsequently said he worked with the group largely to promote the 1995 Million Man March.

I hope that they all do well, for our country. I must admit that I am concerned about those who supported this guy....namely the Nation of Islam.

Eh? Didn't say a thing about what kind of place it is to live. It would be a great place if about 65% of the current population moved to the Peoples Republic of California or Oregon, and you're probably 1 of those 65%...assclown.

The excuses keep on coming for Ellison's behavior
    September 17, 2006

Keith Ellison's Excuse Brigade -- the "don't touch Keith" crowd in the DFL, the media and the blogosphere -- has gone into overdrive for the man who is the DFL's choice to represent Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District in our nation's capital.

The Brigade cut its teeth on Ellison's 40 or so unpaid parking tickets, and his nine moving violations since 2000. Its candidate hit the campaign trail in June with a suspended driver's license, thanks to his failure to pay his fines. This was nothing new for Ellison, who seemed unfazed. "I don't know how many prior suspensions I've had," he told the Star Tribune. "I don't keep count."
    [...]

But it's Ellison's history of support for Louis Farrakhan -- and the notoriously anti-white, anti-Semitic Nation of Islam -- that has set the Excuse Brigade scrambling. Ellison says that his association with the Nation of Islam was limited to 18 months in the mid-1990s -- a claim that the Brigade has repeated.

I'm hearing that when he gets sworn in, he will have his hand on a koran instead of a bible.

How much longer before he gets a prayer room in the Capitol?

I had a teammate in College who was an ex-Nation of Islam member. According to their history, blacks came from outerspace to live here on earth.
They had technology that was much more advanced than we have today. Their downfall as the dominant race was when an evil black "wizard" named Yakub (I think) created the white race in a scientific experiment gone wrong. Ever hear of Malcolm X, who was killed by the Nation after going to Mecca and seeing what he had been made to believe was not true, that there were all races praying in Mecca, not just blacks. Sunni and Shiite leaders reject the Nation of Islam as pure fantasy. White's are referred to as white devils, and only black men can go on in the afterlife.
So yeh, you probably do think that they sound decent Johan.

This movement was started in the jails and prisons of America, that's even where Malcolm X learned about it. Where were you locked up at?
