    Why Steroids Are Bad for You

    The 411 on Steroids' 911
    By Daniel DeNoon
    WebMD Medical News

    If it makes athletes muscular and powerful, can steroids really be all that bad for you?

    In your heart of hearts, you know steroid abuse can't be good. And your heart is telling you the truth. Even when used to treat medical conditions, anabolic steroids have all kinds of common side effects.

    What, exactly, is so bad about steroids? WebMD is here with the FAQ.

    What Are Steroids?

    Don't confuse anabolic steroids with corticosteroids, warns physiatrist Kenneth Mautner, MD, of Emory University. Anabolic steroids are used to build up muscle. Corticosteroids are used to dampen overactive immune responses and reduce swelling.

    The anabolic steroids abused by athletes are synthetic versions of testosterone, a male hormone. Both men and women naturally produce testosterone. But like all hormones -- which regulate the body's most basic functions -- throwing one's testosterone out of balance can have wide-ranging consequences.

    Why Do Doctors Prescribe Steroids?

    Doctors prescribe anabolic steroids to treat certain specific medical conditions. For example, they may be used to treat the muscle wasting seen in AIDS. Steroids may also be used to treat delayed puberty or loss of testicular function.

    Mautner notes that doctors are not allowed to prescribe steroids to enhance a person's athletic performance.

    Are Steroids Illegal?

    Yes. Without a doctor's prescription for a medical condition, it's against the law to possess, sell, or distribute anabolic steroids.

    Legal prosecution can be a serious side effect of illicit steroid use. Under federal law, first-time simple possession of anabolic steroids carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine. For first-offense trafficking in steroids, the maximum penalty is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Second offenses double this penalty. In addition to federal penalties, state laws also prohibit illegal anabolic steroid use.

    Anabolic steroids are powerful hormones. They affect the entire body. Some of the side effects are common to all users. Other side effects are specifically related to your sex and age.

    Men who take anabolic steroids may:

    * Develop breasts
    * Get painful erections
    * Have their testicles shrink
    * Have decreased sperm count
    * Become infertile
    * Become impotent

    Women who take anabolic steroids may:

    * Grow excessive face and body hair
    * Have their voices deepen
    * Experience menstrual irregularities
    * Have an enlarged clitoris
    * Have reduced breast size
    * Have a masculinized female fetus

    Both men and women who take anabolic steroids may:

    * Get acne
    * Have an oily scalp and skin
    * Get yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
    * Become bald
    * Have tendon rupture
    * Have heart attacks
    * Have an enlarged heart
    * Develop significant risk of liver disease and liver cancer
    * Have high levels of "bad" cholesterol
    * Have mood swings
    * Fly into rages
    * Suffer delusions

    Teens who take anabolic steroids may:

    * Have short height due to arrested bone growth
    * Girls may suffer long-term masculinization

    Since steroids are often taken by injections, there is also the risk of getting HIV or hepatitis infection from an unsterile needle or syringe.

    "There are a lot of side effects of steroids," Mautner tells WebMD. "They are not good for you. It is like Russian roulette. Five people may take them and have no long-term problem. The sixth may end up dead."

    Funny you bold up the painful erections side effect...

    I was just in the hospital about 4 weeks ago or so for a bad case of priapism. It required a surgical procedure and I had to stay the night at the hospital.

    I'm sure you can only imagine how fun it was to walk in the ER with some super hard and painful wood, holding my coat in a position to try and hide it, and telling reception that I am there for an erection that will not go down...it was all quite interesting.
    The nurses were trying to act all nonchalant about it and all, but when they were down the hall I could hear them all busting up over it.

    Priapism is a prolonged and painful erection that can last from several hours up to a few days. The priapismic erection is NOT associated with sexual thoughts or sexual activity. What happens is that blood flows into the penis, but is unable to drain as it would in a normally flaccid penis. Considering that the penis provides little room for blood to circulate, the blood becomes stagnant after a while, acidifies, and loses oxygen. Without oxygen, the red blood cells become stiff, and even less able to squeeze their way out of the penis.

    Very few cases of priapism are without an obvious cause. In most cases, priapism results from one of two things: certain medications or medical conditions. Under the category of medications, there are two primary culprits. For one, penile injections used to treat some forms of impotence can cause priapism; however, this usually only happens when a man decides, on his own, to increase the dosage. Second, psychiatric medications, such as anti-depressants, seem to cause some cases of priapism; however, how these drugs affect priapism is unclear. The second major cause of priapism is certain medical conditions and diseases -- generally, any that cause the blood to thicken, or cause red blood cells to lose their flexibility and mobility. Sickle-cell anemia and leukemia are probably the most common conditions that cause priapism.

    Most men will seek treatment for this painful erection before it goes on for too long, usually within four to six hours. This is good since priapism can scar the penis if not treated early enough, and this can lead to impotence. In most cases, treatment involves draining the penis with a needle placed in the side of the penis. Medications that act on the blood vessels can also be injected to help shrink blood vessels and, thus, decrease blood flow into the penis. Sickle-cell anemia patients with priapism are usually treated by blood transfusion.

    Interestingly, this condition was named after Priapus, the Greek god of fertility. Statues and pictures of Priapus always showed him to be rather well-endowed and, seemingly, perpetually erect. And, if Alice remembers correctly, there was a small rock band out of Somerville, MA that called themselves Priapism....

    I just had that occur to me once, I was sitting in class and had a boner that lasted maybe one hour. I tried pushing it down but the b*itch wouldnt go down. It didnt hurt but was annoying.

    Maybe someone secrety injected me with steroids?
    Come to think of it I was feeling rather large that day and had tits and lost my hair and my penis shrank even though erect. Then started to verbally abuse the professor, then roid rage embarked and I ran my car into the campus. A girl who saw me told me I was demented, I found her attractive and banged her against her will.
    That is Mein Kampf

    The second paragraph is ficitious, the former is not.

    About 8 hours!!! I was looking up home remedies on the net and tried everything from an ice pack on my unit to some sudafed, as suggested on a site I looked into. Needless to say, this did nothing.

    I called my doc, and he told me to get my ass to the ER a.s.a.p. or I could suffer permenant damage to the penis leading to impotence. Heaven forbid, I did not want this to occur so I reluctantly took me and my raging hard on to the ER and had this treated.

    After a follow up with the Urologist, he had determined that it was a combination of things that likely caused it. From the use of AAS, most particularily the proviron, which I was dosing at 100mg/ed at the time and I've since then stayed at 50mg/ed with no probs and another med that I was taking to help with sleep called trazodone, which is known for bringing about cases of priapism. Under the advice of my doc, I haven't touched the trazodone since.

    Thankfully when I went in for a one week follow up, I was pleased to tell the doc that all systems were go and fully operational, however he did tell me to try to abstain from any sexually arousing activities for another week so that I could avoid a possible relapse, but I told him it is too late...I had already used it the day before with no ill-effects and he said, "Well, this is very good then".

    He said if it ever happens again, get to the ER right away rather than trying some home remedies. And that I was lucky to not suffered any permanent damge from dealing with it for as long as I did before I sought medical attention. Well, now I know, lol.

    I wouldn't wish this experience on someone I don't like, it sucked. Only thing half way decent about it was the 2 fresh and hot looking nurses that were a part of the surgical team.
