    Mullah Omar Living in Pakistan

Captured Taliban Spokesperson: Mullah Omar Living in Pakistan
    Wednesday, January 17, 2007

KABUL, Afghanistan — A Taliban spokesman told Afghan agents who captured him that the hard-line militia's chief Mullah Omar lives in Pakistan's southwestern city of Quetta protected by that country's powerful intelligence service.

Pakistan's interior minister on Wednesday called the claim "totally baseless."

Mohammad Hanif, a Taliban spokesman captured Monday near the border with Pakistan, made the comments during interrogation by Afghanistan's intelligence service, which distributed to reporters a video CD of what it said was his questioning.

"He lives in Quetta," Hanif says of Omar, as he sits in an oversized chair in a dimly lit room, as Afghan agents pepper him with questions. "He is protected by ISI," the 26-year old said in a quiet voice, referring to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency.

President Hamid Karzai made similar allegation during an interview with The Associated Press last year, saying Omar lives in Quetta and is protected by Pakistan's security services.

But Pakistan's Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao rejected the claim, saying "this is totally baseless."

    IMO:
Either this is meant to drive a wedge between the US and Pakistan, or If this is true, Musharif has allot of explaining to do.

Well the Taliban is/was the creation of the ISI. The taliban was a success story for Pakistan. The taliban was able to conquer and control around 90% of Afghanistan, something nobody else was able to do. All this under the influence of PAkistan, now the US tells them to rid itself of its own creation. It would be hard to believe that they would not keep some ties. Also a lot of ISI are sympathetic to the Taliban, naturally, versus the US.

So is Musharif blowing smoke up our asses when he says he is a member of the war on terror, or is he not in control of his own forces?

Honestly I dont know but Im almost sure hes doing a juggling act. He is trying to marginalize the Taliban but I would highly doubt that he would just cut ties completly. If Im not wrong I think he may have come from the ISI or maybe with Pak military. I mean its literally just like asking to cut ties with your son. Pak had infleunce in Afghan and now Iran is taking over and India are extremly joyful to the turn of events. So I do think he is trying to help but he has his own interests to look after. Also he will be assasinated if he sides to far with the US. This is the reason I think the US is reluctant to push Musharraf, they dont want it to backfire and let Pak turn into the hand of some religious nutcase.

if the Taliban had not allowed Bin Laden and his boys to train and stage operations from Afghanistan they would be still be in power today, there would be the usual hand wringing over human rights abuses etc. but they would have been left alone

Omar is a pawn like Pakistan and Bin Laden , a pawn of the US that benefits their agendas.
