Saudi Lashing Foreigners for Drinking, Dancing

Saudi Court Orders Lashing, Jail for 20 Foreigners for Drinking, Dancing at Mixed Party

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A Saudi Arabian judge sentenced 20 foreigners to receive lashes and spend several months in prison after convicting them of attending a party where alcohol was served and men and women danced, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The defendants were among 433 foreigners, including some 240 women, arrested by the kingdom's religious police for attending the party in Jiddah, the state-guided newspaper Okaz said. It did not identify the foreigners, give their nationalities or say when the party took place.

    IMO:
We may disagree with the punishment, but the foreigners should have respected the law of the land, just as I expect foreigners in my country to obey our laws.

Having said that, I dont want to hear any complaints when a Mulsim woman wants to wear a Burka for her drivers license picture, or some such nonsense.

I totally agree, nobody sent them there and one must abide by the rules of the land or face the consequences.

I don't agree with the Saudis on this. It's heavy handed and oppressive. The Saudis dance and drink, in their own arabic style and somehow that is acceptable, yet foreigners were arrested for dancing at a private party? It's BS. They come over to the US and demand that they are allowed to portray themselves and live as they do at home, including their traditional clothing, yet they demand under the threat of arrest and even death if we expect the same considerations while in Saudi Arabia, especially not in the public eye?

    I don't buy that.

If a Mulsim man kills his daughter (honor killing) for speaking with a boy in my country, I expect him punished as the murderer hi is.
If a Philippine man kills my cat and eats it, I expect that man to pay the price.

But when in Rome do as the Romans, and respect the law of the land. If it is forbidden to drink and mix with women in Saudi then that needs to be respected.

Exactly. You don't have to agree with the laws of another country, but you are expected to abide by them when a visitor, or emigre. Spank on Saudi!!

But we're not talking about extreme issues and law violations here, which with your examples I clearly agree. That goes without saying. I'm simply referring that in this case foreigners were arrested and flogged for doing what they (Saudis) themselves do in their own country, yet hold others to a completely different set of standards. And I would bet that they weren't arrested by the regular police, but by the abhorrent Religious Police.

Well I have never been to Saudi, but I do know that drinking is forbidden. So if they actually do these things and are just practicing a double standard, I dont know.

Just the fact that there exists a separate and unaccountable police contingent -- the Religious Police -- that goes around intentionally looking for the most irrelevant and benign transgressions and handing out the extreme punishments that they do is what rankles me. They idea that for some violations they will bury the accused up to their necks in the ground and then stone them to death is barbaric.

Dont get me wrong, I despise this lack of personal freedom, it is no different then the Taliban with the "Morality police" who behead people at the local football field.

I was in Pakistan when that happened and saw a video tape of it. But it happened at a 'soccer' stadium. Afghanistan doesn't have 'football' fields. You foreigners have to understand that 'football' is played with an oblong ball, not a round one. J/K

saudi arabia, the UAE, and kuwait are the worst countries i can think of. they're swimming in oil money, yet the masses get oppression and slavery, and encouragement to hate israel and the western powers as if they're the ones with their hands directly on those peoples' throats.

I will agree with you that is barbaric, but it is their way of life...just like it's ok to kill your wife (kitchen fire is the #1 cause of death for women) and to beat her with a rod or strap..

as for the "Religious Police" again, it is their way of life, their culture, just like here in the USA we protect the rights of people who want to have sex with fruit, it's just their choice..

I know what you're saying, but it is the arbitrary and capricious double standard that irks the shit out of me. The only reason they invoke some of these issues is not based on religious, or cultural law, but simply because whatever it was that was being done was by foreigners, when the transgression being charged is acceptable by Saudi standards/citizens.

Yet the same damned people come here and demand that they be allowed to live and act according to their cultural/homeland standards without any concern for how it may appear to us.

the big picture in saudi arabia is you have roughly 6,000 royal family members controlling roughly 25 million native inhabitants plus who knows how many foreign workers, many of whom are either virtual or real slaves, and a number of bourgeois groups, esp. including religiouos leaders, clawing for the crumbs. of course their society is repressive.
