    For Logan... sofa label

    http://consumerist.com/consumer/slur...php?mail2=true

Maybe this lady and her daughter should just get over it!!! LOL!!!

Doris Moore's seven year-old daughter did not understand a racial slur affixed to the packaging label of a newly delivered sofa. The sofa was purchased as part of a set that included a loveseat and chair. All three items bore the offensive label. The Toronto Star recounts the heart-wrenching discovery:

"She's very curious and she started reading the labels," Moore explained. "She said, `Mommy, what is nig ... ger brown?' I went over and just couldn't believe my eyes."
After explaining the slur's meaning to her daughter, Doris tried to pry a well-deserved explanation from Vanaik Furniture and Mattress, the store that sold the seating set. Despite three messages, the store refused to return her calls.

The store's Assistant Manager apologized when found by the Canadian press and promised to check his remaining stock for similar offenses, but placed the blame squarely with his supplier. The supplier promised to contact his Chinese manufacturer and "demand they remove all similar labels."

The demand is appreciated, but we want to know if the unnamed Chinese manufacturer shipped merchandise bearing offensive labels to other stores, or if the incident is limited to one Canadian family and their seven year-old daughter.

Let's be honest here. Any sane American is not going to condone racial slurs if for no other reason than they are immoral and divisive, but this is a 2-way street. No group should get away with doing so, minority or otherwise. The first amendment protects free speech, and this includes hate speech. Sometimes hate speech is wrapped up in "satire", but it is hate speech nonetheless. Satire is not a tool for only minorities to use, the Constitution guarantees this to everyone. I do not appreciate hearing racial remarks about anyone, and I believe that most Americans cringe upon hearing the N-word; white, black or otherwise. But like it or not, even the N-word can not be outlawed. It's use can be scorned, but it will always be part of the American lexicon.
My problem is with the so-called "civils rights leaders", namely Jackson and Sharpton, who have both gone on record making racial slurs and have never been called on it. When asked what the rest of us should think about their actions, they say that forgiveness would be prudent. Now they try to come across as the hate-speech police, and that is the definition of bigotry. Imus is a putz, but the consequences of his actions should not be up to this divisive duo. Let's face it, if we woke up tomorrow and racism was irradicated, what the hell are Sharpton and Jackson going to do for a living? Racism is their business, and they make sure that business is good by their over-the-top bigoted reactions. The next time anyone uses the term "free speech", "first amendment rights", or "satire", remember that this applies to everyone, not just the disgruntled few....

Look I agree with you in regards to Sharpton and Jackson. Both are opportunists looking to make a buck and neither are doing anything to tackle the real problems in the black community. Both recognise that people like Imus are meal tickets for their own money making agenda. The problem I have with you and other's like you Logan is the 'get over it' rhetoric often espounded. Racism and racists speech is extremely harmful no matter how it's said. The reactions of the n-word make black and white alike cringe, but it's for different reasons. And if you can't see the differences, there in lies the problem the needs to be confronted. I don't think Imus should be fired. He is entitled to his opinion and he IS protected by free speech, but recognise the harm it causes and end the 'get over it' mentality.

What Logan and I have going is simply differences of opinions. There is no malice or true hate there. I started this thread to poke fun at Logan and I know he knows that.
