Well lets not jump too soon. If you read the article closely, and some follow up articles the news isnt that great. First of all the virus can still be hiding in the guys body. Second of all a bone marrow transplant is a massively dangerous and invasive procedure, as well as being hugely expensive. Also only about 3% of the population carry the gene that makes them immune to HIV. The Dr's have known about this gene for a while and have been working on ways of utilising it.

There's optimism in your pesimism though. Okay, only 3% of the population have a natural defence against HIV, that combined with this discovery can only mean that we are one step closer to finding a cure for a disease ravaging mankind.

A lot of scientific breakthroughs are made through accidents. Im keeping the hope!

Sure sure. But every cloud, silver lining ya know. I mean, with Stem Cell Research, they reckon they can just about cure anything. Something Miz Palin was VERY against, I might just like to add...

What concerns me most is that I wonder if the drug companies really want to cure things like HIV and Cancer, the treatment for theses diseases is a multi million dollar industry.

Oh I agree, i've heard other such conspiracy theories on other such illnesses. Makes you ****ing sick if governments would allow human suffering to make a quick buck, would harldy be surprising though.

The world is disgustingly over populated as it is...

Life will eventually find a way to adapt and become immune to this...

Or it will be another black plauge...

    One of the two...

Have to agree in part, the battle of fighting desease will never be totally won, as we beat one, another will start, it's natures way of trying to curb a species that is out of control.... just look at antibiotics and penicilin and the new types of deseases that are now getting immune to them (superbugs as there called) plus we are adapting to these drugs and they are becoming less effective.

Note: having spent a great deal of time in many Africian countries and talked to many people there i have heard a comment from many that can be very hard for us (in the western world) to really understand and the comment was (at the risk of being edited) 'That AIDS is the last hope for Africa' what they mean by this is that the population levels are now such that hunger, starving, desease, conflict etc etc will never stop, there are way too many people more than can be fed and almost every country in Africa has doubled + the sustainable levels that that particular country can maintain. Funny but the West is very much to blame for this situation

As Medical Science attempts to find cures for everything, Nature will throw more and more deadly strains at us until it throws something that just wont be curable. Humanities quest to become immortal will actually be the undoing of us. Just my two cents.

Magic Johnson has HIV and not AIDS. He is still terminal with no cure but takes the cocktail of drugs that cost about $10,000 a year.
The reason so many people in the US do not get the cocktail is because a lot of the US is uninsured and you can not get medicaid unless you are full blown AIDS.
So MJ still has it, and can afford the treatment.

EVEN if this guy is cured....

THERE IS NO MONEY IN MAKING CURES....the medical field makes money in treating you and making you just well enough to go on....

like chris rock said...."all they wanna do is patch you up"

"pour some 'tussin on it" "mo tussin!" "mo tussin!"

that's not really how adaptation works. these resistant strains will occur whether we're fighting the lower grade strains or not. especially with a virus like hiv that is not that highly communicable, we're talking something where it cannot simply reproduce a shit ton and fill in the gaps in some ecological niche left vacant by its wiped out immediate ancestor. of course our own species gets selected for new resistances as well, so it's not like we're simply facing deadlier and deadlier diseases with no hope too.
