suicide hides war's true cost.

Suicide hides war's true cost
A dirty little fact you should know: For every one of our military personnel killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, 25 veterans of those wars have committed suicide. Something we all need to keep in mind whenever someone begins to talk about war with Iran or any other country.
I normally don't ever engage in any conversation or debate that I know will not get resolved. But I'd like to change some of your opinions on the way you view the troops that defend our country and its way of life. So please stop watching and preaching what you see on the news. For the most part they are inaccurate. Please research your own facts or ask someone in the know.

I would be interested in backup to those facts. Not that I disbelieve them...I don't trust any facts like that without context.

This thread (and threads like this) are a great opportunity for spontaneous learning. The reader gets through a few lines and "accidentally" learns something new. Unfortunately, just making a claim and then saying "look it up" doesn't get many people engaged.

So my question is how should our view of the troops be changed by this statistic?

There was a very in-depth article about this on www.projectcensored.org - I feel like that's a pretty good - unbiased site.

25 suicides for every KIA? That's roughly 120,000 suicides. I think their math is a bit fuzzy. That being said, I agree with the fact that our men and women need better mental health assistance when returning from combat. 1 in 5 suffers PTSD.
