Norwegian BB dies when benching.
A father found his son dead in his homegym at the benchpress with the barbell at the throat.
I think its hard to imagine, its so easy just to bend the barbell to the side. Maybe he got a chest tear. Police said he lifted heavy and he was 48, the age when tears do happen.
Or he slipped the barbell so it crushed into his throat.
Terrible to think of and a reminder. Be care full at the bench guys when lifting heavy and alone.
(No use in link cause it wasnt much more info than this and in norwegian)

This would be why I have my pins in my rack set to catch the bar just below my chest. Fail, release arch, slide out from under it. Even if a muscle were to tear and drop the bar, the worst I’d get is a bruise.

I did something very similar many years ago... the main reason that I started going to a gym.
I was lifting and couldn’t get it back up. I figured that I would just roll the bar to my legs and sit up..... just one problem..: once it hit my abs, it sunk and there was no way I was going to get it past my abs.
Luckily, I did not put collars on.... but I still had an issue... I couldn’t muster enough strength to flip it to one side. I was thinking that I was going to die..: I tried o e last time and was able to cantilever it just enough to get the weights to fall off.
It was a close call

Just yesterday at the gym I was doing dumbell side raises and I heard "help... help....", I look behind me and the guy is benchpressing with the bar resting on his chest..... so I go over and try to lift it, I get it 2 or 3 inches up off his chest but it's too heavy for me to lift any higher, so now I'm looking around saying "help help" and so another guy comes over and he holds up one side of the bar while the weights slide off the bar. If ever I fail at bench press I always lean the bar to the side like that and let the weights slide off.
My current gym though has a metal frame for benchpress and also squat rack to catch the bar when you fail. I don't know if I'd ever have gotten my squat up to 100kg if I didn't have the frame to catch the bar when I failed.
