I dig the K-12 Health & Wellness idea, but sex-Ed that early? I’ve taught it to 9th graders and that is really trippy sometimes. We aren’t allowed to discuss certain topics and masturbation is certainly one of them. More than one health teacher has been temporarily suspended briefly for slipping up unintentionally or just being an idiot and saying or doing something without thinking.

Yeah, first graders should be focusing on say.....the alphabet and pencil fights. Common core type education.

It's all to sexualize children. You don't need to teach anybody how to masturbate (they figure that out eventually on their own by the time they're 13) and you certainly shouldn't be teaching that to little kids.

    That’s nuts.

Honestly, though, kids need to be taught internet etiquette. That should be a class. How to not get addicted to porn, social media, ehm forums, etc. Reality vs fantasy. Shit like that. The internet messes up a lot of kids.

At 13 or 14, I found their knowledge and awareness about sex (like most things) is all over the place. Although I don’t completely disagree with you and have never discussed this with any students & have no definitive idea, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if some honestly don’t know from some of the questions I have gotten.

Different school districts handle sex Ed differently in what they do and don’t allowed taught. Ours is conservative. For instance in some districts kids learn how to open condom packages and put them on a “similar shaped object”. We didn’t. Our teachers wouldn’t dare discuss masturbation even if a kid had a sincere and genuine question. I honestly can’t see any teacher in their right mind discussing how to do it though.

But then again, you would think by now male teachers, coaches, administrators would know better to not get involved with female students. It’s also happened with female teachers and male students. But it happens in our district almost every other year. It’s a profession that has so many land mines you can step on either on purpose or by accident, it’s no wonder why it’s tough to get decent teachers.

I’m not joking with this, in fact a few older teachers like myself openly mocked this because we knew we were near retirement. In our high school and many, we are recently teaching how to be polite, what positive things to do and then offer positive praise or rewards for them. It’s a nation wide program. Things such as saying thank you, holding a door for someone, washing your hands in the bathroom, not pissing in the sink or how to shout profanities. The list is endless. I can’t tell you how many staff meetings we met over 2 years to come up with the necessary things to prioritize the list in our particular school.

Some common sense stuff is just not being passed on or addressed at home. Completely agree with you about the internet. Even our worse battles here, where admin has to shut down the thread doesn’t compare to some of the internet bullying the kids are exposed to daily. With cell-phones in their tiny hands at earlier and earlier ages, it’s a battle we are losing.

I don't think kids should be taught to masturbate at all. Like I said, that's something you sort of figure out on your own. And if the kids really don't know, then that's not such a bad idea too. The world existed for thousands of years before kids were ever taught to do the 5-knuckle-shuffle in school. I think they'd be fine if they still weren't taught that.

Perverts get in to the teaching profession all the time. I don't have any solution to fixing that, but there needs to be better ways to screen for them. But the problem is getting worse every year.

My view on sex education is that it is the parents' job to teach their kids about it for the most part. The education system should ONLY be teaching it, when the kids are at a age where they're mature enough to talk about the biological aspect to it. It certainly shouldn't be the education system's job to teach acceptance of people's preference or that any sort of "behavior" is normal or quite frankly any agenda. Those aspects are the jobs of parents and religious institutions. They also shouldn't be teaching how to put a condom on.

I guess I was lucky in that I had normal parents that taught me manners and how to behave myself. It wasn't till I got older and realized how some of my friends had parents that were either not present, drug addicts, or just not very good parents in general. I'm sure you've seen a ton of lost causes in parenting over the years in your career. Some people just shouldn't have kids, but ironically, they often have the most kids.

You missed my point or the fault was mine in not being clear. This is not a situation where a minority of kids from broken homes or have irresponsible parents are screwing up. This is being viewed as kind of an epidemic in school districts because of an overall breakdown in parents not bothering enforcing basic stuff to the kids.

Like I said, the older teachers like myself that don’t have discipline issues happen a lot, roll our eyes at it & tried not to get fired by shooting our mouths off at multiple staff meetings. For younger teachers, particularly females, it’s getting ridiculous. It’s called PBIS (google it) and the approach is gaining momentum because a lot of parents are dropping the ball.

I agree with you about some people should not have kids. I’ve had to deal with dozens of them over the years at school and it’s a losing battle. I’m happy that I’m out now because it gets worse every year.

If thats similar to 2 girls, 1 sandbox, I get it. That said, my students told me about that one several years ago & it had little to no effect on them.

Sadly, they just don't make kids like they used to.

I'll run across the occasional responsible youngster and am always glad to help them/show them simple mechanical resolutions to problems or how to safely use machine tools.

Unfortunately, the vast majority live in a fantasy hybrid video game/social media world and think that integrity is the name of a shampoo.

Makes me really appreciate the responsible members of the younger generation.

In this day and age (at least out out here), that type of stuff isn’t a good indicator of the quality of the kid. The positive things kids tell me they do, often impresses the hell out of me, and then they’ll do or say some dumb-ass crap that has you shaking your head, just crazy. This kid in particular was just alright in high school and now 10+ years later a solid young man and a successful lawyer. Just saw him in the gym by school before Covid.

What we really need is better guidance of these kids by their parents & I’ve seen such a void there. Going back to the origin of this thread, many times we are teaching them stuff that really their parents should, but the parents don’t want to take the time or they don’t have the interest.

    Goofy but rewarding profession.
