The submersible disaster
It's been all over the news. 5 men, including a 19-year old, perished in the imploded submersible headed for the Titanic site. Was it a foolish or brave decision? Maybe a bit of both?
My take: I'm not sure what else there was to discover or record from the Titanic shipwreck. It has already been visited dozens of times and we have high definition footage of the wreck. So, the whole "doing it for science" argument doesn't make much sense to me. A few of the passengers were long-time divers, explorers, etc. So I kind of get that the trajectory of their lives took them here. The billionaire Pakistani and his son... well he was apparenly obsessed with the wreck and his son came along to support his dad, but was apparently terrified of the ordeal. Rightfully so.
And what about that vessel? To me it looked like a science fair project, not something I would pay $250,000 to go to the bottom of the ocean with. I think it's very tragic what happened, but at the same time I can't help but think "what the hell is wrong with you?" to agree to this "adventure."

Seems to me that it was a bits n pieces piece of equipment or as you say “science fair!”
The guy drove the fucking thing with an X-box controller ffs!
Not to be a dik but it was a rich man’s fantasy that went terribly wrong!_____________________

From what I heard Harding or Rush (or both) were one of these "cheat death" kind of guys......they're also likely genius level, combine that with what was probably a big ego and this was bound to happen eventually.
The Nintendo controller really did it for me.

Yeah, I get the impression he had a few screws loose, which is kind of a requirement when you're pushing the boundary in things, ehm Elon Musk.
I just watched an interview with a guy who went on a demo dive with this submersible, along with the CEO. He was saying that as they started going deeper, he heard cracks and pops, and that the deeper they went, the more of them they heard. The CEO assured him it's nothing to worry about. The hull had censors in it that would alert the passengers inside of any serious cracks. The director of Titanic, who went down to the Titanic a bunch of times with another craft and was familiar with the Oceangate sub said the passengers would have heard cracks before the catastrophic implosion, and that they were likely trying to resurface when the implosion happened.
Everyone wants to think it happened so fast they didn't even realize what was happening, but I had a feeling it wasn't quite as unexpected as they claim.

From what I read the release forms were very frank & honest, they knew the risks. A lot more adventure seekers w/too much $ and not enough sense die annually on Mount Everest.
Just wait till those billionaires start sending people to space for big $, because you gotta think there’s a disaster waiting there.

30 milliseconds to die ain't bad in terms of a suicide technology. Or 'euthanasia'. No chance of being left a cripple.

If they find an obliterated rubics cube it will be ironic. The son wanted to go so he could set a world record of solving the cube next to the titanic. I read he can do it in 12-13 seconds. That doesn’t cut it up here, but 2 miles down? A shitty reason & way to end a young life.

I've been following all the news about this tragedy. And until the last moment I wanted and believed that they were alive. But, alas, lost lives cannot be regained. I think such diving should be banned.
